Things to ponder over....

AI Overview

The human body is generally considered to have a natural maximum lifespan of around 120 to 150 years, largely determined by the intrinsic rate of bodily decay and loss of resilience. While average life expectancy is roughly 73 years, the upper limit reflects the absolute maximum time our biology can, in theory, sustain itself before critical failure.

Key insights on how long the human body is designed to last:
  • Maximum Biological Limit: Researchers and models suggest that regardless of health, human resilience typically collapses entirely between 120 and 150 years of age, setting a "hard limit".
    • The 120–150 Range: While the oldest recorded human, Jeanne Calment, lived to 122, some models argue the theoretical maximum is 150, but reaching this requires excellent genetics and habits.
    • "Designed" vs. Achieved Life: Our bodies evolved for survival to reproductive age, with many longevity studies suggesting an intrinsic, optimal lifespan of about 97 years, though this varies based on environmental factors.
    • Average vs. Maximum: While average life expectancy has doubled to over 70 in many places, maximum lifespan has not changed significantly in history, despite medical advancements.

I have been working in nursing homes since 1996. One lady Tilly, lived to be 108. But there wasn't much left of her mind. She would set with a blank stare on her face saying, " Hello. Hello. Hello".

Another woman Rachel, lived to be 104. She actually lived in 3 different centuries. She was born in November 1900, (last year of the 19th Century). She lived through all 100 years of the 20th Century. On January 1st 2001, she was still alive and breathing, so she began living in the 21st Century, her 3rd century of life. She finally passed away in 2004.

sombre thoughts heh? My father died 20 approx before his wife [my Ma] sobering thought heh - she re-married and became happy again I think? Younger brother died from leukaemia [uncotrollable despite meds] - he was the joker of the family I always miss him - sister and I remaining - she is a few years younger than I - we may go together??

The fact that Keith Richards and Willie Nelson , have outlived Richard Simmons, has me rethinking this whole exercise and eating right, thing !
Agree! Is it possible genetics plays a big part in longevity? I think happiness may. My mother was a good cook. She knew I was careful about diet. One meal she proudly announced what a healthy meal she had made. I told her that the asparagus looked great except it was smothered in a butter/cream sauce!

I am about done depriving myself of tasty food. Was thinking last night that ice cream sounds really good. A trip to the store is in order today for a few other things and I may pick up a carton of my favorite flavor. And maybe some cookies, too. Ha! Take that!

Is learning from mistakes better than succeeding the first time?

Maybe Richards & Nelson know something about life I didn't. Not much time left but might be worth trying their choices.

Genetics plays a big part in our life for many things. To live a longer life, it’s not a bad idea to limit our risks, like no smoking, eating healthy diets, but don’t deprive ourself “occasionally” of the piece of pie or cake we like so much.

I remember reading Ann Landers years ago and she wrote anything in moderation is fine, except the bad habits of smoking, eating fatty foods or too many sweets, not getting enough exercise or sleep, etc. They were all practical ideas, so zi try to stick with them. I used to have a penchant for anything sweet, but after reading Ann Landers, I decided to pull back on the sweets. Besides losing 15 pounds, I felt much better with having more energy.

I will tell you what I ponder. I often wonder why drivers don’t know how to get on or off a freeway ramp without having to stop. I yell at the driver (in mind only) “There’s no stop sign there. It says YIELD, not give up.”
