Thinking about cutting the cord but need opinions, please....

OK...here's the deal. We have had DISH (ya, I know...don't go there) for over 4 years at this house only because there is nothing else available out here in the boonies.

Our contract ended in July and I wanted to not renew but hubby is an avid NASCAR watcher and I could not find where it would be available anywhere else other than on our DISH. I've been threatening for at least 7 years to get rid of cable/satellite service but always caved and gave him his racing channels.

So, recently, I discovered Youtube TV has the 2 channels that he watches for racing. YTTV is $65/mo., DISH has gone up to $101 for 120 channels that we don't even watch anything except nightly news.

Here's what I need opinions on: do I bite the bullet and pay DISH the cancellation fee of $20 for each month outstanding (which would be about $300) and be done with them or should I wait?

If I’m reading this correctly your net savings each month will be $16.00 for the next year.

If it was me and I enjoyed DISH I would keep it until you are ready to move back to Pennsylvania.

Not quite right. We would save $36/mo., which would be $432/yr. saved.

I was going with the $65.00 for YTTV plus the $20.00 penalty totaling $85.00/ month compared to the existing DISH fee of $101.00 for a net of $16.00/mo.
OK?? That $20 penalty would only be a one-time expense to get rid of Dish. It's not added to YTTV every month. Total savings would be $432/year. If my penalty is $300, that's only 3 month's of what I would have paid @ $101/month for the next 2 years. To me, it's a small price to pay to get rid of DISH, who keeps increasing our rate. We started out 4 years ago paying $57/month, then after 2 years it went to $72/month, now it's $101/month.

I hear ya....we too live in the boondocks and and to put up with DISH for several years before our local electric company put fiber optics in our area and offered a good bundle of TV, phone and internet for a better price.

Doing some math, it looks like you might save about $200 by going to YTTV, even after having to pay off DISH. If you decide to go with YTTV, make sure your internet speed is high enough to handle the "streaming"....I would suggest 100MB, or more.

You might also check to see how far you are from the local TV transmission towers. If you are within 40 or 50 miles, with no hills, etc., you might even be able to get one of the home antennas to work for you.

Also, check on All the streaming services...Hulu, Sling, etc.

I've checked OTA receivers but we would only get 3 channels and they were "iffy" at best so it's not an option. Hulu and Sling are the same price ($65) as YTTV but they have fewer channels. Going to give it a shot with YTTV. Wish me luck dealing with canceling DISH. They're not going to go quietly, I'm afraid...haha. Yes...living in the boonies has advantages but a few disadvantages, to, doesn't it?

If you cancel DISH, who will be your broadband provider?

We use Comcast and it's like $110 a month, which is ridiculous since we basically just use it for broadband. We do get Showtime with it. Since we don't get HDTV with it and the TV signal is only 720p, when we do watch network TV, we just use the antennae for an OTA signal, which is HD.

We have a separate provider for internet. It's through our electric company and costs $77/mo.
