He was born in Ulverston (England) about 12 miles away from where I live. Here's a pic of a monument to Laurel and Hardy which I took a couple of years back.

Laurel and Hardy were my most favorite comedians. I have a DVD. I find a lot of stuff funny, but very seldom have a loud belly laugh. They always got me laughing. I first ''met'' the duo when I was in grade school in Venezuela, the school would show a film once a week. There they were called "El Gordo y el Flaco'' (the fat and skinny). The episode I watched was when they had been kidnapped in a boat and were asked to cook dinner. They had no food and made spaghetti with twine, but the bad guy made them eat it. The expressions on their face while eating was hilarious.
I read that they remained friends until Hardy died. I forget why Hardy could not speak, so when Laurel visited him they would more or less talk in pantomine. How sad!
