Thousands ignore health warnings to flock to U.K. beaches during heatwave

Thousands of people ignored warnings from health experts, flocking to the beaches in the United Kingdom on the hottest day of the year so far. Officials in several towns have now declared a "major incident" and called on the government for help.

Temperatures surged past 30 degrees Celsius, or 86 degrees Fahrenheit, in England on Thursday — a major heatwave for the region. The council that covers Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole on the country's southern coast activated a multi-agency emergency response to deal with the issue.

That's craziness although I imagine it is hard to control what beach goers do unless stringent measures are taken. Looks like that's what they will start to do now but it's a classic case of closing the stable door after the horse is loose.

I am reminded of the opening of Charles Dickens' book 'A Tale of Two Cities' - It was the best of times, it was the worst of time.

When lock down was introduced and strict rules were applied we heard of people helping to deliver shopping to the vulnerable, clapping our National Health workers on a Thursday evening , thanking our services for keeping our shops stocked, keeping social distances etc etc. But now that lock down has eased we have massive gatherings on beaches and tourist areas where there are no toilet facilities (leave your imagination to that one), people dumping rubbish which is costing the councils in clean up, taking much needed money crucial for other services, no social distancing and no mask wearing by many. Add to that, street party gatherings that are not allowed, with police injured in their attempt to break up the parties. I thought we had turned a corner in humanity during lock down but clearly even the threat of death from the virus whether to themselves or others cannot stop the hubris of some people. :(
