Three year old has Alopecia

Now I admit.....it has always been very difficult to treat. Do you know what has caused it?

So sorry to hear this, Ina. Do they have any idea what might be causing this in the first place??

Nothing at all. They said she is to young. Her mom is making pretty bows that she attachs to a head band. I sent her pretty and funny hats for Christmas. But I fear for her once she starts school.

It may well grow back, often does.
over here, they can use steroids, but you won't want that long term.
have they recommended any special shampoo?

Yes to the shampoos, but they said not to wash her hair very often. Her mom has always washed her own hair once or twice a day, and is haveing a hassle not washing Rachael' s hair.

Shortening her hair and not putting in too many things that may pull it out physically is a good place to start. Alopecia is many times a sign of a Biotin deficiency in the diet. Here's a page with some information, including foods that contain Biotin. Also dosage by age if you want to use a supplement, I've taken Biotin myself for it's other health benefits, and have some on my shelf right now. I have Swanson brand 5mg capsules, but a child so young would need a lesser dose...http://www.natmedtalk.com/wiki/Biotin

Another thing, frequent shampooing is not good for anyone's hair. The maximum amount should be 3 times a week, preferably only two. Also, a gentle natural shampoo is better, not one with any chemicals like sodium laurel sulfate, etc. There are Biotin shampoos and conditioners available, or just a simple plain natural soap like liquid castile soap is much better than most store bought shampoos. I personally would not use any treatment which contained steroids in any form, especially for a young child.

Thanks Seabreeze, I to use biotin. I have nails that have grown so thin that they split vertically, so I use quite a bit. I will send all your info to my granddaughter. She is doing as much research as she can.

SeaBreaze; you and I will often differ about treatments for various ailments, because of our, obviously, different upbringings and life style.

However, this time, I agree totally, and I also would tend not to use steroids in a young child; except, short-term, in a chronic asthma attack.

I also agree about the shampooing. We use tea tree conditioner over here a lot, for head lice!

We live and learn, from each other.
