TICS

I am a little embarrassed to be asking this, but does anyone suffer from Tics? About 10 years ago after I would begin to relax at the end of the day, my body would suddenly begin to jump. To explain this further, here is an example. Around 8 pm when I would finally be able to sit down and relax and either read a book or watch a movie, one of my arms would suddenly act like I was throwing a punch, or my leg would act like I am kicking something, or maybe my whole body would suddenly jump.

I told my doctor about this yesterday and he said that unless it would get worse and I would do it while walking down the street or was having a conversation, he didn't want to give me any medication. He said these are called Tics. It is the brain suddenly beginning to relax and to rid itself of the extra energy that was stored within. Of course, none of this made any sense to me.

Has anyone else ever experienced this and did your doctor ever give you any advice or medication for it? It's not serious, but very bothersome.

I've had those sort of episodes happen also...usually just an
arm jumping for no reason, or my hand jerks when just sitting
still....also have had full body spasms....never discussed it with
the doc tho....

I don't think they are abnormal to have them occasionally. But if you never had them before, it would probably strike you as abnormal. It makes sense to me that they are stress related, but I'm not the doctor.

Get a new doctor. Maybe a neurologist. Your doc is an idiot. Sorry, there are plenty out there.

When i first met my mother in law i noticed very subtle tics every now and then........
now 35+ years later Husband has had a couple show up ...... he just looked at me and said well i was wondering when they would show up ...
if they are small doubt many even notice and unless they are a problem why bother with pills that have more chance of worse side effects then a small tic.

"...the brain suddenly beginning to relax and to rid itself of the extra energy that was stored within", sounds like a lot of BS to me. If it is bothering you have a neurologist evaluate you.

I have that quite a bit, have seen the doctor, neurologist. I have migraines and all the muscles in my head, neck, shoulders arms tense up. She told me in my case it is just the muscles finally letting go and trying to relax.

My brother has a tic but his was caused by polio that he had as a child. He is now 72 and still has them. I notice his are worse if he is excited or stressed. Otherwise they are just something he does. I don't believe he ever took meds for it.

Eye tics are quite common, I think. You can feel your eye jumping but can’t see it when looking in a mirror. I know this isn’t what you have but may be a similar bodily reaction that’s considered harmless.

Yeah, that's a nice story ....for a 5yr-old.

Tics are indeed caused by the brain firing off signals to muscle and nerve tissues, but it isn't normal, it's misfiring. The specific cause is under study, so there's no cure yet, but there are treatments. Treatments include medications they give to people with Parkinson's and seizure disorders, but they only Rx them if your symptoms are a threat to your safety or significantly disrupt your daily life.

Sounds like you have a level headed physician, all too many doctors would have you on all sorts of medications at the drop of a hat.
As some have mentioned, the "tics" sometimes occur when your body and mind are starting to wind down.
Let's make a distinction here: Once in a while...don't be concerned, but if it's happening frequently enough to affect your quality of life, then it's time to spend some money on testing....

It doesn't happen when I am active. It's when I lie down or just ready to fall asleep, I will suddenly jerk my arm, leg or my whole body will suddenly jump. It doesn't last long, only an instant. My doctor said not to worry about it. I thought about asking the VA doctor to see if he would come up with the same diagnosis. He said if it continues or becomes worse, I would be tested for Dystonia, whatever that is.
