Time out

Don't go. I've jumped into the pool a time or two myself and cracked my rather thick skull on the deep end. Take a day or two off then start again in the humor section. Always a cyber friend..........Trax.

Just to let you all know that my browser has ad blocker included so I do not see ads unless they are posted by the poster and yes I do dislike when the subject does become contentious and goes off the main discussion but that is not the sole reason.

I did a quick search of some posts in other subjects including my own with my Safari browser which does not have ad blocker and indeed they do show all sorts of advertising which means that ads in my posts, while I cannot see them myself, can be viewed by those who do not have ad blocker.

In looking at some of my own posts it did show advertising for various subjects which I have researched such as clothing, medications, suggestions etc., etc and referred to in the posts.

I have no objection to the forum owners showing banner ads at the top of the page as it is a source of income for them together with subjects picked up from conversations, but not sure that I like the banners appearing in my posts and therefore visible to those who do not have ad blocker.

I have checked this out in another forum which displays banner ads at top of page and it does not happen in individual posts.

This does bother me and is part of my decision to back out for a while to think and see if there is a way around it.
Possibly clearing search history before posting is one way .......

All for now folks

Many many many many many websites and forum owners, admins and moderators frown on potential or existing members using IP hiders and VPN's and they possess the ability to detect their use. IP Hiders and VPN's hamper investigations of membership threats, intimidation, cyber bullying and other crimes committed using electronic media.

If a forum or website member or potential member uses an IP Hider or VPN it reeks of mistrust and that sting goes both ways.

Thanks for reading.

Ads are one thing. Something else that's very disturbing that I didn't realize when I first joined Senior Forums and that has just recently come to my attention is that all posts on this forum can be shared anywhere and viewed by strangers not at all connected to this forum. Everyone here can "share" any post to any email address and to Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, Pinterest, Tumblr, and WhatsApp. I know this is a "public" forum, but it feels like an invasion of privacy. If I wanted my posts to be read by people at any of these sites, I would post them there. I like this forum, but I don't like that fact at all. The more I think about my posts being viewed elsewhere, the more upsetting it is. Why is this necessary? Is it to bring traffic to the site?

Bella, that's pretty much on every site anyone visits and comments on. When it's out there in cyberland, it's everyone's property.

Those ads only show up on your computer. Someone else is viewing something different. Granted their are some ads that show up across everyone's (without ad blocker), but again... those ads of seemingly personal nature do not show up on everyone else's computer.

Yeah, @Lewkat , I know there's nothing I can do about it but that doesn't mean I have to like it. ;)

I have no dogs in this race however Lewkat is spot on. Adverts are not particular to SF which is one of the few forums that still doesn't charge for membership period. There are the two tier subscriptions where free basic membership restricts certain areas while a paid upgrade membership provides full access. I am quite sure that you must notice that even on internet platforms like Google, AOL, Yahoo, Outlook and a whole host of other search engines, ads follow you from the very first search result until you sign off without clearing your browser cache. All my internet access devices that use WiFi exclusively I clear my browser cache after every search. Overkill? Maybe but at least it's my best effort to attain some modicum of privacy. I hope this in some way helped you in making an informed decision based on fact and not emotion. Take care and GOD Bless.

On FB, for example, you would have an option whether to be private or public? I didn't think SF was social media.

I'm not on FB. Public or private, it doesn't matter. If you have a FB account, they track you wherever you go. You don't have to have a FB account to be tracked. If you simply visit FB you're tracked. :cautious:

Any forum is social media.

Well if you're still here...I understand the need to take time off sometimes. I hope you have a restful time out. If you're returning after taking time away Welcome Back! Regarding ads. I notice if I log on using Chrome, I see ads. But I never see ads on SF when I'm using the Brave browser which has a built in ad blocker.

Thanks, I don't know if grief forums are social media too, but I guess so. At the time, I probably needed a health forum due to shingles, and maybe a grief forum due to my dad passing away. I've enjoyed this forum, but I think the others I mentioned would have been more appropriate for me at the time. Tracking me would just be a lot of news to read. I appreciate your help.
