Hi Everyone,
About 15 years ago, I realized I was going to die. I always knew it, like everyone does. But there comes a time in your life when you "get it". like never before. I started to think about all the people who have died before me and felt a sense of awe - like when I was a child. All those unknown people who contributed to who I am now, wherever or whenever they were in the world - culture, society, language, art, politics, inventors, war, power.
So my first retirement goal became to travel all over the world to see how culture developed. Most of the year I read about it. And then I and my camera start traveling through time. First I tracked down my European families or birthplaces.
I wanted to see the first evidence of "conceptualization" - the first artists so I went to southern France to see the cave paintings among other medieval sites. I just returned from Renaissance Italy. And that is only the beginning of western civilization. I better live a long time because I have a lot to do. Oh well, it is the process not the goal.
So, unfortunately I am still working on my second retirement goal which has been more elusive. I have been retired a year, and am still searching for who I am.
Trish

Hi Oneworld. Welcome to the forum. Being seniors I suppose we all occasionally dwell on the meaning of life. What's it all about and are there still things I wish to accomplish? I often like to think that I wouldn't be here if those who came before me were immortal. There would be no room for me to live, no food for me to eat. Death enables new life. After I die somewhere a baby will be born, and there will be room to breathe & food to eat for that child. It's like we take turns living. I'm living my turn right now. I want to make the most of it. You sound like you want to get bang for your buck too!

Wow Trish, That is such a wonderful way to spend your retirement years. I'm sure you are finding out so much about the families and the world that became a part of you. I hope you get to every places that you have on your list.
