Some of the things we do to avoid catching the Flu/Colds..

At restaurants after reading the menu my wife has a small bottle of sanitizer that we use. We don't think the restaurant wipes them down enough!!

In Doctor's waiting rooms we don't read/handle the magazines that the other sick people handle!!

When we enter any business, we grasp the handle at the bottom with one or two fingers!! The wife uses her sleeve!!

We avoid establishments that cater to alot of children!! They don't clean their hands!!

What can you add??

Mainly just stay at home as much as possible during flu season. When I do venture out, I try to go on a weekday when hopefully most people are at work. Avoid crowds, wash hands often.

I grab door handles with a finger or two at the bottom also Ken. In the supermarket I use those shopping cart wipes whenever available. As soon as I get home from shopping anywhere, I wash my hands before I start touching anything in my house.

I try not to touch my face at all when I'm out and about. If someone around me is coughing and sneezing, and I can't avoid being near them, I try to breathe through my nose instead of my mouth, don't know how much that helps but I do it.

I beef up on some vitamins in winter, like D3 (5,000 IUs) and Vitamin C (1,000 - 2,000mg). I do try and stay away from kids too. I haven't had the flu in decades or anything close to being called a cold, not like when I was younger, working around people and getting annual flu shots...then I was sick a lot.

I notice that locally most stores with shopping carts are now providing those antibacterial wipes in a dispenser next to the carts. I appreciate that because I always cringe thinking about the handles of those carts! I even wipe down the "baby seat" section because we all know about baby seats. :D

I'm afraid the cold virus doesn't survive on the conditions you describe.

The virus or bacteria that causes a cold or flu is floating in the air. The only way it can enter your body is through your nose or mouth.

Best tip. Stay away from people that have a cold or the flu. They can infect you.

I thought this information from Senior Planet was interesting.

What is the best way to avoid getting the flu, besides the vaccine?

Yes, it sounds like the department of duh, but keeping away from sick people can help, says Dr.Ghurabi. That may be even more important, in light of new research from the University of Maryland suggesting it may be easier than experts had thought to spread the flu virus. Experts have commonly believed that flu is spread by exposure to droplets from an infected person’s cough or sneeze or by touching surfaces the virus has contaminated. However, the new research found that people with the flu contaminated the air around them with infectious virus just by simply breathing—no sneezing or coughing required.

What else can you do to stay healthy during flu season?

Our doctors have these tips:

Wash your hands often and with soap—for 15 seconds or so.
Have fever reducers available so you can treat yourself promptly.
Consider wearing a mask (from CVS or your own) when you’re out in a crowd to maintain your healthy status.
