The New Forest in Autumn.
The New Forest's history is fascinating, beginning with it's creation by William the Conqueror in 1079 as a royal hunting ground. This "Nova Foresta" was established for deer hunting, leading to the displacement of local communities and the strict enforcement of Forest Laws. It is also the alleged site of King William II's death by a mysterious arrow in 1100, commemorated by the Rufus Stone. The forest later played a vital role in providing timber for the Royal Navy and was a strategic location during both World Wars before becoming a National Park.
