Today, does anybody even bother with maternity fashion?

I like reading Dear Abby and similar advice columns. Recently there was a question from someone who does not care for the current fashion trend pregnant women wear. Or should I say, the lack of wearing maternity clothes during a pregnancy. Women today just seem to squeeze into their pre-pregnancy wardrobe. I am not offended by the new look. But I am old fashioned, I suppose, and prefer the appearance of loose maternity fashions women used to wear.

My wife always wore maternity pants, with the hole in the front, and nice tops. She would have been embarrassed to pose as some of the women do now. Of course, that was over 50 years ago. I do remember when she was pregnant, she glowed,at least up until the last month or two.

I don't like it when the top is so short their belly bulges out like a giant balloon belly button and all, when they walk towards me i am worried this huge belly is going to burst ,yummy mummies these days seem to think because they are proud of their baby belly that we would enjoy seeing it, some things are best covered up with a Tshirt at least. I am not a prude far from it,it's all about dressing appropriately especially when out in public.

I don't mind any fashion but I remember I was looking forward to wearing cute maternity wear. My favorite was a navy blue mini-dress I would wear to work. It had a very scholar look and I felt very sexy in it (even though I was a blimp!).

It doesn't make sense, but somehow I felt the looser maternity clothes seemed more protective of the little one inside.

Unfortunately, that`s what`s available out there in maternity clothes. My DIL is pregnant and I have shopped for clothes with her. They "SAY" maternity but I don`t know why they even bother to differentiate-they all just look like regular sized clothes to me. Everything is very "belly hugging"-hard to even imagine that she will be able to wear them the last couple of months. Even she says that she will probably just wear loose fitting sundresses by then...

I know; it's like a defiance of their changing body as the pregnancy progresses. They want to wear exactly what they've always worn irregardless. Then it becomes the style and they imitate each other even though they look bizzare at times.

Ironically, there are fashions that aren't maternity ones per se, that are oversize and loose they could wear, but they go for the tight fitting ones.

I'm going to be the odd one out. ;) I love the clothes they wear nowadays. When I was pregnant with my first child I can remembering wearing a shift dress and being very proud that my bump was noticeable. But several people commented that I should be in maternity wear and I was made to feel a little embarrassed so out came the voluminous maternity dresses.

I hated maternity clothes, which were designed to cover up the fact you were pregnant. If I was pregnant these days I would wear normal clothes.

Always curious, who came up with that word MATERNITY anyhow?
