Today's Root Canal

Had a 2-Hour Root Canal on an upper left molar that had lots of decay under the crown (all my teeth have crowns).
I was worried about it because of my near-death experience with a root canal 3 years ago - when an incompetent dentist didn't complete it before sealing the root, causing Sepsis & several days hospitalized in Intensive Care.
BIG difference today; I stopped at the pharmacy on the way home to pick up his Rx of Codeine & an antibiotic because I was expecting some pain after all the anesthetic wore off. All the anesthetic is completely worn off & there is very little pain & I'm having coffee - HOT the way I like it.
I don't even have that awful soreness where the needle goes in for the anesthetic!

Unlike my previous dentist, he repeatedly checked to make sure he went completely down to the end of the root before filling it.
What a difference when someone actually has pride in their work!

In contrast, this dentist said to only take the antibiotic if there is throbbing pain; otherwise don't take it. He's obviously knowledgeable about the risks of the overuse of antibiotics. Other dentists have told me to take antibiotics before they start any work. Bad Idea.
In a couple of weeks, (when everything heals) I'll be going back for an extraction & bridge.
Looks like I finally found a great dentist!!

I am terrified of dentists; especially since one broke my jaw while pulling a wisdom tooth. I hope you get all well with your teeth problems.
Thanks. With my teeth, (bad since birth) it's never a pleasant visit; it's always going to be a big job, but at least when you're in good hands, the chance of complications is minimized.
Several dentists told me my issues are all due to a "Dry Mouth" condition.
I've had 30 crowns, 8 more replaced, 29 root canals & a 3rd bridge in two weeks.
What I've had to spend in the past 30 years could buy 5 nice new cars............ :giggle:

That type of injury is often the result of impatience. Your dentist probably got frustrated when the extraction was difficult & yanked on it too hard. Dentistry requires LOTS of patience. My horrible experience with Sepsis resulted from my dentist wanting to get his next patient into the chair ($$$$$$) & my root canal was taking longer than he wanted, so he just sealed everything up, leaving infection which spread.

I am still terrified of the dentist and start worrying about the looming appointment days before it happens, at my age it' pathetic, but I can't help it, stems way way back to a cruel brute in childhood.

A few years ago my dentist was finishing up a root canal and flushed the canal with calcium chloride. I instantly felt like a thousand bees had attacked my upper lip. The chair assistant said she could see it swelling. So what I had was an angio edema, an allergic reaction. The dentist told me what it was and said he didn't
have the antidote on hand (he should have.) He called another dentist who said he didn't have any, either (liar) He asked if anyone was at my home. I said no. He said, "Well, go home and put ice on it and come back in four hours and I'll finish up the root canal."

He never should have done that. I've since read how life threatening that is because the tongue and throat can swell as well as the face and cut off the air supply. Anyway I lived through the four hours and went back, at which time he looked at me and did what he should have done in the first place and sent me to urgent care. There I got the anti-allergy shot I needed and something to lower my blood pressure which was sky high.

Then the nice urgent care doctor, his entire staff, and I, all stood in front of the mirror and stared at my reflection.
The area all around my nose and mouth had turned as black as velvet, the pressure had tipped my nose back so that you could look straight up my nostrils and my frizzy blonde hair hung down the sides like ears.
I said I was turning into a Pekingese and we all laughed till we cried.

There are a lot of differences in how a Root Canal is done. Many years ago my town dentist did a root canal on one of my back molars. I was in the chair for about 2.5 hrs. I said at that time I would never get a root canal.

Well, I changed to a dentist whose specialty was root canals & crowns. plus he has girls that do cleanings.
I had him do a molar 3 roots canal & gold crown. I sat in the chair they put nitroxide oxide on me. About 5 min. in he came & numbed that ONE tooth real good. He sat on his chair for 5 min. then started. I was out of the chair in 45 minutes.

I ask him how he did that so fast? He said if you have the right equipment & training it goes easy for you & me both. NO pain or antibiotic medicine & & was fine. No jaw or tooth pain when the anesthesia wore off.

So all I can say is if you need a root canal look in your phone book or google your area for root canal specialists A root canal should NOT hurt.

Spot on. Previously, i preferred dentists who did everything because I didn't want to be sent to another dentist for a root canal.
Yesterday, I realized that a specialist is the way to go. The specialist that did mine only does root canals & procedures that require different knowledge than cosmetic dentists.

I've had multiple root canals, but haven't needed one since I got my Covid vaccinations.

Just sayin' (y)

Good for you. Sepsis is a horrible illness. I had a dear friend die from it just a few years ago. Another botched medical procedure.
My sister almost died of Sepsis when I was in England some years back. I shortened my vacation and flew home as soon as I got the call. I make all of the medical decision for my sister as far as her health, eyes and dental needs. My sister is kind of messed up in the head. She has a number of phobias and medical issues, so she asked me to be her legal Guardian, which required a judge to sign off on.

There's gotta be a connection there.
Ya know, one day last month, I was attacked by 4 Rabid dogs & also bitten by a Cobra.
I didn't get any treatment; I just ate a raw onion & I'm fine. :ROFLMAO:

OMG Della, that's horrific

I recently had a very old root canal go bad. Endodontist didn’t think it was worth having the root canal repaired and suggested I get it pulled and get Invisalign braces since my lower teeth were so crooked. Talked to my dentist and an Orthodontist. Both agreed the Invisalign was a good idea. So, got my tooth pulled and have been wearing the Invisalign since May. The gap where my tooth was pulled has almost completely closed.
Root canals are no fun. I was relieved when the dentist, ortho and endodontist all agreed the bad tooth wasn’t worth the cost of a new root canal.

Broke your jaw? Never heard of such a thing, so sorry Pam, don't blame you for being terrified. I don't like dentists, but never had a horrible event like that in their office.

His words, not mine. Never went back to him but found a new dentist, right away.

Can a dentist fracture your jaw?

The most common way that dental negligence jaw fractures happen is during a tooth extraction, when so much force is exerted to remove the tooth that your jaw is fractured as a result. Mistakes that happen during dental implants procedures can also cause fractured jaws, as well as nerve damage.
