Torn Paw Pad?

I don't know how he did it. Callie was sucking his back foot today...not something he normally does. When I looked, where his pad connects to his foot was bleeding. I used peroxide and a spray dog bandage. I just cleaned it again. There are a bunch of broken bottles always in the streets, loose nails in the back steps. He's good on his shots. But anything else I should do? Kids and critters, they always get sick in the middle of the night or holidays. The emergency vet charges a few hundred more than we can afford and it really doesn't look that bad.

Oh! Poor Callie. He will probably take care of it himself. I would think if he isn't favoring it more tomorrow than today it is probably healing. Maybe you could put a loose bandage on it when he goes out just to keep it clean then take it off when he gets inside to let the air at it. Sometimes they lick to much and keep it from healing. Then I suppose he would need one of those cone shaped collars so he can't reach it. Lets hope it heals quickly.

If you're sure there's nothing in it, and it doesn't look too deep, you can bandage it like Ruth suggested. Here's the vet wrap I use, they sell it in pet stores and I've even bought it at Walmart. http://www.entirelypets.com/3mve4x5ydasc.html?gclid=COK_l5mn1s0CFQusaQod6WkFOA

It's stretchy and sticks to itself, stays on pretty well, just don't wrap it too tight regardless of what kind of bandage or gauze you use. Has all the bleeding completely stopped? If not, Styptic powder will do the trick. Can you touch it okay without Callie looking like he's in too much pain? It's good if you can, then you can feel better that there's not glass or a splinter in there.

The peroxide (or rubbing alcohol) is always a good thing, glad you disinfected it. Hope he feels better soon and there's no complications.

Fur, I hope Callie is on the mend. I believe you did what would have been done at the expensive clinic. And they might have added additional unnecessary treatment to enlarge the bill. I know the feeling. It seems ailments occur for us and our pets on weekends and holidays. Keep us updated on Callie's foot.

Antibiotic ointment perhaps?? And keep him in while he heals, except to do his business. Hugs and kisses to Callie.

Harold tore his paw pad badly once and the vet did about the same thing as you did. If it's not too deep, it will probably do just fine on its own. Just keep it clean and be sure there's nothing in it. I have some spray-on wound stuff I use, but the dogs HATE it. I think peroxide is probably better than alcohol, because the alcohol will sting like crazy.

Bandaging a dog is usually pretty hopeless, as they'll just chew it off the minute your back is turned, and be very, very careful not to get the bandage too tight. You don't want to impair circulation.

If it starts to look infected, get him to the vet for some antibiotics.
