YARMOUTH, Mass. (AP) - A tornado that tore across Cape Cod has put an exclamation mark on a wave of storms that broke the heat in the Northeast and Midwest.

The National Weather Service says the tornado struck the Massachusetts resort area just after noon Tuesday. It ripped off a hotel roof, toppled trees and knocked out power to thousands during the peak of tourist season
There were no reports of injuries.

Utilities in New Jersey say around 212,000 homes and businesses didn't have electricity Tuesday morning. Crews in Michigan were working to reconnect about 100,000 customers who still didn't have power.

Yikes! Heard about that. Nothing seems to happen in moderation anymore where the weather is concerned... Everything is full-blown and extreme. I have a relative that has a summer home on Cape Cod, and I think she's there now.

Hope she's ok, @Bonnie!

We have a few MA members here too. Hope everyone is safe. Tornadoes are not common in New England but we do have them now and then.

Yikes, indeed. My sister lives about 14 miles west of Yarmouth.

Tornados are rare in Massachusetts, but not unheard of. I remember my father, who was a civil engineer and therefore had a professional interest in viewing the damage, driving us somewhere to see the results of one when I was perhaps 8 years old. Very scary. But not all that scary since we had hurricanes in the mid 1950s and there were trees down all over the place, including a huge maple next door.

We live about 30 mins. from the Cape Cod bridges that span the Canal. We had the heavy rains and a 2 day hot spell but nothing more. I only became aware of the tornado from the local newscast. As someone mentioned, tornadoes are a rarity up here. Hurricanes are more likely and even they are few and far between and usually somewhat "played out" by the time they get here.

Last week was really hot and humid...than a good storm came through here Sunday night, and our weather this week has been great. This same front is what hit the East coast in the past day or two.

The temperature extremes on the east cost this week are some of the craziest I've seen and it was the key factor in forming the tornado that hit the Cape. It was 95 degrees here for 3 days straight and then the cold front which brought the tornado moved in and it was 65 degrees yesterday. A 30 degree swing in less than 24hrs is bizarre.

CT too, Jim, Our big T-storm was the night before yours. It did cool down from 95 and 98 to mid 70's but not as low as yours. Yes, bizarre.

We didn't have a Tornado, but we had the biggest Lightening and thunderstorm in decades overnight here, lasted about an hour, did quite a bit of damage in some places.. but sadly hasn't broken the intense heat!!...100 deg for us tomorrow in London...
Spend the day where it's airconditiond like the movies, library or shopping mall. I hate the heat!

I love the sun tho''.. and I wouldn't want to be cooped up when the sun is out!! I just don't like it being THIS hot, ..I can cope in Spain because we have the AC and the pool.. but here ?..Nada... even the nearest leisure centre pool is packed like sardines... 😧

Well, that's why my suggestions; no AC and no pool.

So, stay outside then, but do be careful! I heard Europe is in the oven again.

We're forecast for 102 deg f today....

Britain is braced for what may prove to be its hottest day in history today, with temperatures forecast to climb as high as 102F (39C) on what is being dubbed 'Tropical Thursday'.

The scorching conditions could trigger thunderstorms - which could mean travel delays, flash flooding, and even power cuts - and rail bosses plan to slow trains amid fears of tracks buckling as the metal heats up to 122F (50C).

Warnings were issued over the dangers of cooling off in lakes, rivers and the sea yesterday after the bodies of three people were pulled from the water following reports they reportedly got into difficulty swimming.

A yellow weather warning is in force for most of England, except the south-west, and parts of Scotland from 3pm on Thursday until 4am on Friday.

According to the Met Office, there is a 60 per cent chance today will break the all-time UK temperature record of 38.5C.

'It will get into the 30s across the country and reach the mid-30s in the south-east,' Met Office meteorologist Greg Dewhurst said.

'If it is to get to 39C, it will happen somewhere between London and Cambridge.

'Temperatures locally could also break July or all-time records.'

Lightning storms have already caused fires and rail disruption this week and Network Rail warned today speed restrictions may be introduced in areas where tracks are at risk of buckling, adding that it has 'activated' its 'extreme weather action teams' to keep passengers safe and trains running.

Industry body the Rail Delivery Group advised passengers in London and the South East to consider changing their travel plans and LNER advised East Coast Main Line customers against travelling at all today, warning services were likely to be cancelled or delayed as speed restrictions will be imposed between Peterborough and London King's Cross.

The Met Office said heatwaves are on the increase as a result of climate change.

It is even possible the mercury could climb to 40C, which would be 'unprecedented' for the UK climate, weather forecasters said.

The scorching temperatures gripping the UK and much of Europe come against a backdrop of global warming of 1C since the Industrial Revolution driven by greenhouse gas emissions.

Both Belgium and the Netherlands broke their all-time maximum temperature records on Wednesday, reaching 39.9C and 39.1C respectively, the Met Office said.

In the bold is the area where we are...^^^^^

While you are getting all that heat Holly, we (southern US) are having a rare cool front for a few days. 60's in the mornings.
Things are sure topsy-turvy!
W had 101 deg today... it was sooo hot..... !!!!...I could do with 60 degrees right now... . It's after 9m and it's still over 80 with high humidity..

We went out, and it was hot at the gardens and Jacobean house we visited, but beareable as we walked around the acreage and visted the walled gardens and lakes .. then when we left and went into the village nearby the venue , for a drink at the local pub, the houses are all several hundred years old cottages and crammed together and not the tiniest of breezes can get through those narrows streets , , I thought I would faint when I got out of the car, it was like a Blast furnace hit me .. fortunately the pub has super strong AC..I could have stayed there for the rest of the day!

Soon after we got home, we had another massive thunder & lightening storm..... heavy rain the whole 9 yards for about an hour, but did it cool the air?...Nope!!

It's wonderful! I grilled out this evening and it was 84° F (ambient and no heat index increase) with a breeze at 5pm. Such a treat for late July in Mississippi.
