The town of Maplewood NJ is banning the use of leaf blowers during the summer months.

Times of use will be limited and/or specified. Legal motions to stop ban already in progress. I can see contractors being upset.

I think people miss the point that leaf blowers produce just as much air pollution blowing particulate matter all over the place. It's not just about noise.

I've always thought that the practice of blowing crap all over the place is just ignorant. Of course, since I have allergies, I am a little biased.

I live in the High Desert near the mountains, so there is a breeze almost constantly. When I see someone using a leaf blower, I smirk a little bit, because more often than not, the wind blows the leaf junk right back. ;)

Does the ban apply to those of us who use it inside the house, or is it just outside.? (Hey, that and the power washer are how I clean house...)

Not only is it landscaping contractors it's the customer/resident that expect them to do it and would rip them a new one if they blew their debris towards their house. I think both the resident and contractor are committing illegal trash dumping every time they blow the matter into the air and/or off the property.

As a retired engineer, I am amazed at how loud a lot of power equipment is. Seems like they make it as loud as possible because customers associate loudness with power? They should be able to make a lot of that so much quieter that the noise problem goes away. Maybe if communities pass noise ordinances the manufacturers will start making them quieter.

I will give up my leaf blower when they pry it from my cold dead hands. :)

I bought a leaf blower years ago when we rocked in the front yard, it was the only way to get all the leaves off the rocks from the city trees. I use it every fall, blow the leaves off my rocked lawn and sweep them up for disposal in the trash or in my compost pile. I never blow them into the street and leave them there, or onto anyone else's property....but I have seen landscapers do that even though it's against the law.

I hate... no, DESPISE leaf blowers and even worse, the morons who stand there for 30 minutes waking the dead with that God-awful racket on a quiet Sunday morning, just to chase after a few blades of grass on their driveway when they could've just taken a push broom and been done in 10.

It's the gas powered ones that are absurdly loud.

The electric ones aren't all that bad.

I hate all the noise also, but like SeaBreeze I use it to get it out of the rocks in my front bed. I just wish that we could all get it done on a Saturday morning so we can have a peaceful day of rest. I remember my grandpa using the old push mower with the gentle sound it made with each pass he made. For me it actually had a calming affect. Of course I realize it just isn't practical with the size of some folks property.

Mine is electric and I usually blow my leaves in the fall on a weekday, mid-afternoon when a lot of folks are still at work. I try not to mow my lawn either too early in the morning or too late in the evening. Ruth, never remembered being close enough to anyone using a push mower but you make it sound so nice. Probably a back breaker with my lumpy lawn. :chores:

I saw a guy earlier this week blowing the leaves (our leaves here in Florida fall in the spring....figures..) into the street and right into the storm drain. Just the thing to clog the drains.

I used to reverse my blower and suck the leaves into the canvas bag. The rotor pulverized them and I could get about four times as many leaves in a leaf bag that way. I did try to be considerate and not start too early. My sister had a neighbor who would leaf blow for hours in his tiny yard. He appeared to be somewhat on the spectrum and I suppose it was an obsession with him. Later he took up spraying water on a large sheet of metal for an hour at a time.....very loud. It's hard to say which was more annoying.

Hmmn? As far as leaves go . I used mine to vacuum up the leaves and bagged them for the dump. We use paper bags and the leaves are composted. The resulting compost is given away free. I found that the best to get leaves out of the rain gutters. If you like trees you have to like leaves .
