ToysRus and BabiesRUs...Too Long at the Toy Store

Has anyone browsed these stores recently??? I mean it's incredible how much stuff they've created compared to when many of us were raising kids. When I say too long at the toy store, my girl is almost fifteen and still into the toys and games. I pull up a rocking chair and read while she window shops...everybody's happy.

But I mean the first was born in 1984 and she 2001. Between those years the baby industry must have exploded. There used to be like four choices for each product. Diapers, Binky's, recliner seats, activity ride ons, baby bottles, sippy cups. Now there is a whole aisle of just bottles and nipples.

A whole wall of sippie cups. Recliner seats that do everything except fly and there's probably an app for that. Car seats...when my parents got me one it was state of the art. A fabric covered shell with a three point strap. I remember it took like two hours to fit into the car. Now they have ones sturdy enough to withstand nuclear attack...heavy too. Try picking up the one that becomes a stroller.

I remember nursing and working. There were three brands of breast pump. None very effective and you had to be creative. You'd take the plastic bottle liners, a strip of tape over the top and date the bag. Then you'd line the freezer door with frozen milk. Now they have everything for nursing you could think of and more.

Something simple, decorating a baby or older kids room. I counted more than thirty nursery themes...sheets, blankets, wall decorations...probably matching PJ's and paint suggestions too. I thought I was jazzing it up using glitter suspended in pink paint for a princess bedroom. Now it's all coordinated for you.

Don't get me started on electronics. I saw one of those cute little keyboards. Baby friendly, just four keys. But everything else sings, talks, plays music. I can imagine giving a stuffed toy or doll as a present and a child being surprised because it doesn't do anything. I know I'm getting old...

I find that store totally overwhelming and if it didn't look totally tacky, I'd love to give the grandkids a gift card but I think I'd cause a few raised eyebrows (as in 'what a lousy grandmother you are') because they're six and nine. But when they hit their teens, it's going to be gift cards all the way. I remember how picky my girls were at that age and how disappointed my mom was every Christmas when they hated her gifts and took them back for the cash.

My granddaughter who is almost 9 is into Monster High. I find Toys R Us overwhelming and we usually just go in to grab whatever we are after (Shopkins usually) and get to heck out of there. It is unbelievable how many things that are available now that weren't years ago.

I hand painted tedddy bears holding ballloons all around my sons room.

Now,even though everything is coordinated, parents still stress overload of choices.

I wonder who will take over the world first...Disney or Shopkins? No, Disney will buy the Shopkins brand and that will be the end. But like everybody says it must be overwhelming for new parents. Like diapers, for my first baby they had Pampers and Luvs was a new brand. I remember those things were huge and if you didn't change them on time you'd have a blow out, all that nasty filler stuff. But you had maybe three brands including generic. Now it just makes you dizzy picking one.
