The Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia - known as 'ground zero' for the city's drug epidemic - is in crisis due to widespread abuse of an animal tranquilizer called xylazine.

Addicts are shooting up in broad daylight, hunched over in a stupor or passed out on the streets. Many have raw, gaping wounds in desperate need of medical attention. And there are needles, syringes and garbage littered across the sidewalks.

'I've never seen human beings remain in these kinds of conditions,' said Sarah Laurel, who runs outreach organization Savage Sisters.

There is an area in Philadelphia where there are several of these individuals who have used this stuff. Frightening to see. Anyone entertaining using a drug should be required to see these videos.
There's actually hundreds of them Lois... A watch on Kensington PA Youtube videos will horrify most people ... but this drug is new on the streets...

Problem is now is that many cities have areas like this. Some of this comes back to not enforcing loitering or vagrancy laws no matter how minor. Won't stop all the drug abuse but it puts alot of them back in the shadows out of the way. And if it winds up being incentive for a few to get their act together it will be a win win.

They should use these videos as a scared straight program in schools. And make those in rehab look at them. Sometimes one ignores what they see in the mirror but if they see it from a different perspective a light bulb goes on.

You would think that looking at videos like this would scare people out of even starting using drugs. I made a deliberate choice to never use drugs not even once in my life. I've never been high ever. Not even weed. And drugs were not even as bad or as visible as far as how much they harm people as it is today. I don't see why people even start with the first usage. You would think looking at the million youtube videos on drug overdose and drug usage that they would run from it. I don't understand.

No it's beyond me too Victoria.. never having used illicit drugs in my life either...

The thing that makes me scratch my head is..never mind youtube videos, or TV , or films, showing the effects of drugs.. what about those who see it on the streets where they live.. in places where it's Rife like in kensington PA.. right there in front of their eyes they see the devastating effects of drugs on the people.. sick, some dead in the streets.. people getting beaten up while they're drugged, people stealing and killing to get their fix.. filthy, rotten teeth and skin, half starved... all to get the money for drugs... what makes people look at that and think...Hmmm.. I'd love to get me some of that !?:cautious:

It's hard to understand why someone would want to live like that, and why so many people want to live like that. It doesn't seem like much of a life.

That's logical thinking. Some don't like it but stick with it because they have no responsibility or obligations. It's a simple life. For some it's scavenging for what ever and the druggies are seeking that next high supply.

I can't remember the actress's name but she was a star in the 1990s on BayWatch. But every time someone tries to get her off the street she refuses. She says that is where she wants to be. They show her pushing her shopping cart of stuff around. She's been able to survive in a place where celebrity doesn't mean squat. Probably lots of others with a similar story.

It really doesn’t look much worse than East Hastings in Vancouver. I could go to most cities in BC and find an area just like this, just not as many people.
It is a huge problem in any country, Jules. So discouraging, I wish more would volunteer time and energy into helping with this issue, there are plenty of organizations out there all over, that would welcome help. I would think even in England there would be similar organizations.

If I was looking for a "simple" life, I'd become a monk or join a commune. Being out in the street just seems awful. And it's dangerous.

I think I saw a story about Joanie from Happy Days being destitute and living in a trailer.

Most drugs nowadays are made with Chinese chemical feedstocks, legally produced and shipped to many countries, like Mexico where the gangs and cartels make industrial quantities to be smuggled and pushed on to the naive American youth.

What a perfect way for the Communist Chinese to:

a/ Make money on the chemicals
b/ Deteriorate the USA by addiction the youth
c/ create chaos in the US cities with the crime, disease and filth.

Possible Fixes:

Force all politicians to live in these areas, not in their manisons in WDC.

In Philippines Duarte rounded up the drug dealers and executed them.

USA Coast guard and military interception of Chinese ships and plans containing drug precursors

Exactly! It's crazy.

It's not, they walk around like zombies living from fix to fix and always looking for their next fix. Nothing else matters to them. And everything they think or choose to do is not in their right mind after that. They may think they are thinking straight but they are not. They think they like living on the street but they are not in their right mind. Not till they are clean and sober will they be in their right mind.

That's crazy because there's a million other ways to achieve that goal like moving out to an Amish - like town or something. Or moving to a ghost town with like 50 people in the whole town or something, away from big cities. Or if you have money, move to your own island or something that you can only get to by boat. LOL Anything is better than living on the street like that.

Exactly! There are plenty of ways to go off the grid without living on the street like that.

Most don't start out that way but that's the mindset they wind up with ie 'this isn't so bad after all'

Before you know it so much time has passed they really don't even think about changing their ways in part because they have little to nothing to compare their current life too. They don't realize how filthy or dangerous the life is. Familiarity breeds contempt.

Until they want to change on their own because they want to they won't. They might not know how to change but if they really really wanted to they would ask for or accept help.

True. They become desensitized to their own filth.
