Travers Stakes 2022 - horse racing

Living a stone's throw from Saratoga, we are made well-aware that the prestigious Travers Stakes is this Saturday, August 27. It is so celebrated that for some time now, racing fans have campaigned to have it included with the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont as part of that racing sequence. Some refer to it as the fourth leg of the Triple Crown. However, Saratoga race track is also known as "The Graveyard of Champions" as Secretariat found out in 1973, as well as other noted race horses. This is the lineup for Saturday as of today:

Saratoga is still a playground for the rich and famous.

You might see The Dubai Crown Prince, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and his entourage. The Crown Prince has spent a fortune at Saratoga over the years

It’s a fun place to spend a day during the off season and enjoy the same restaurants and businesses that cater to the super rich during the racing season.

Many places close up when the racing season is over. My mom used to say that after the Travers, most of the good horses are transported to other tracks. There usually just a little over a week from the Travers to Labor Day, which is the last day for racing in Saratoga.

I used to stop during leaf season on the way back from the pottery museum in Bennington, Vt.

It was an annual pilgrimage for years.

I have a vague memory of a modern house built into the ruins of an old stone church that was destroyed by fire.

The Travers Stakes will be broadcast on the FOX network starting at 4:30 pm EDT, August 27th. Post time is closer to 5:45 pm. They have to interview every trainer, jockey, owner and results predictor before the race.
