Tribute to the Falling Man

Remember the moments of silence and the candlelight vigils? We happened to be in Barcelona during the 2004 Madrid train bombings and were struck by the similarity in the response of the citizens. We were walking in one of the squares and promptly at Noon everyone stood in silence. There were also candles shining in the evening in La Rambla. We knew exactly what they were feeling.

Oh yes, the train bombings,,, you were in Spain, omg.

I lost a good friend who was flying that day. Jason Dahl taught me most of what I knew about the Boeing 757 and 767. Jason was not only a Senior Captain, but also a training pilot. His lovely wife died like 10 years later. I was told she took to the bottle and pills to kill her pain.

I knew Jason fairly well and I would bet that he didn’t go down without a fight. I’m sure his First Officer did also. That was Flight 93 headed for the Capitol. There were a lot of heroes on that flight. To think, I usually flew that flight only from Washington, not Newark, but I was off that day. Once the hijackers saw they weren’t going to make their trip, they flew it nose down into a field in Pennsylvania. How terrifying that must have been.

The falling man .. may his soul forever Rest In Peace.

That photo brings me so much sadness. He is someone's son, grandson, nephew, cousin, brother, uncle, father, husband, friend. Seeing it is heart-wrenching.

I was flying that morning coming in from Paris and we had to land because they were clearing the skies. I got stuck in New York of all places. I had to wait in my hotel room until the airline called and give me details of my flight out. However, after I heard all the details, I felt very bad worrying about myself. All those people that were killed and all the families that were suffering. I felt so ashamed of myself.
