Dave's hips have been really bothering him, so he unfortunately didn't participate, but our friend Deanna and I went to a kayaking lesson. It was through our rec center. An unusual cold front came thru yesterday, and it was only 57 degrees this morning!!! And to think I was worried it would be too hot! Because of the cold, wet weather, several people cancelled, so there were only 4 of us, and 2 instructors. We met at Blue Hole park, and after a donning a PFD, and getting a few basic instructions, we got into the kayaks. Well, truth be told, I more or less plopped into mine rather inelegantly. They shoved me off and I got to paddle around Blue Hole for a while to practice. Then we headed up river, past beautiful rock formations that form the bluffs, for 3/4 of a mile. At that point, the river becomes too shallow to continue, so we turned around and went back. At one point I was really struggling, because I had drifted into a very shallow area, and couldn't get a full stroke. But I managed to get back into the deeper water. Along the way, we saw a Great Blue Heron, a cormorant, and some Purple Martins. When we made it back to the park, I was tired but happy. This is definitely something I want to do again. And the best part is it's outdoors and we got to drop our masks for a while.
