Trip to Dublin, TX

I was having serious cabin fever, so we decided to take a day trip to little Dublin, TX. I checked online and Erath County has had all of 36 cases of Covid-19. What's in Dublin? It's home to the oldest bottling plant in Texas. They started bottling Dr. Pepper in about 1890 and continued until sometime in the first part of this century. Dublin Dr. Peppers were made with real cane sugar as opposed to corn syrup, and were reputedly much better for it.

Unfortunately, Dr. Pepper decided that the folks in Dublin should no longer bottle Dr. Pepper. Something about diluting the brand. Law suits ensued, but Snapple/Dr. Pepper had deeper pockets. So now they bottle their own sodas. They make the best root beer I've ever had, and about 10 other flavors, including cream soda, ginger ale, and cherry limeade. YUM! We toured the bottling facility. It was a remarkably simple facility, with the newest machine being from the 60's and the oldest from 1929! They had a museum with scads of Dr. Pepper memorabilia.

We bought 2 mixed six-packs, mostly for the grandkids, but some for us, too.

Then we checked out a local store called All Things Celtic. So many pretty things! We ate lunch at a local diner (I had the blue plate special -- meat and 3 sides, plus tea and dessert for $7!) and went home through Hico, where we stopped at a local chocolate shop. We bought some almond toffee and peanut butter meltaways. So naughty.

It was just nice to feel almost normal, except for the mask thing. Really enjoyed our day out. If you're interested http://www.dublinbottlingworks.com/
