Trying to live stress free

As I age I realized that priorities change and expectations that I struggled for are not as important today in my personal development. I try NOT to spend my days worrying about world events and the chaos that goes on. A book I read years ago, 'Don't sweat the small stuff', helped me accept the way things are, helped me slow down and gave me hope that things will change for the better.

I personally adopted a Minimalist lifestyle and have found it works for me. I have more time to smell the roses. In a high pressure lifestyle, you may think you thrive on stress and speed, but once you pull back, you will come to appreciate silence and solitude. You’ll lose the guilt about sitting still and discover that it is possible and rewarding to do less and be more.

When you reduce stress and free up time and space, you can naturally give more thought to how you treat people and how you react in different situations. You can take the time to give more compliments, listen carefully, and smile more. That is my contribution to people I come in contact with.

When you eliminate the smorgasbord of endless choices, and set limits, you can save your decision-making skills for the choices that matter. You’ll be more confident in making decisions and happier with what you choose.

After you spend time away from shopping and accumulating stuff, you’ll realize that you didn’t need all of that stuff to be happy. You’ll begin to see happiness as a choice instead of something that you have to buy or chase.

Living with less demonstrates the uselessness of just-in-case items, and removes the obsession with being prepared for everything. You’ll slowly begin to realize that you have enough. That makes it easier to let go of the clutter and say no to most purchases.

When you live with less, you move through the world with a lightness that allows for change and the uncertain nature of life. When you aren’t weighed down with stress, stuff, and worry, it’s easier to let go, make simple shifts and transition with grace.

When you remove everything that doesn’t matter, to make room for the things that matter most, you can align your lifestyle with your values and stop compromising in an effort to make room for all of it. Understanding what matters and what doesn’t and creating a life with what does, is a massive confidence booster.

Listening to what your body really needs is so important, but how can you hear the messages amidst constant chaos? You have more time to pay attention, make changes, and do what you need to do to live a healthier lifestyle.

“This is who I am without all of the stuff, I’m peeling off the layers of excess so I can know the real me, and you can know the real me.”

Good thoughts. I've always lived simply, never got hung up with the bling and fast life, and never felt guilty about it either. Some time out in nature is peaceful and gets one in touch with what life is really all about. Glad you've parted with some of your stuff, and I believe that yes, the peace will follow. Life will have some stress, but no sense in bringing any additional tensions on yourself, I think that leads to the failure of many. :sentimental:

Son, as I read your words, I was reminded of an onion....layer upon layer....and found this poem:

The Onion :)
Wislawa Szymborska

The onion, now that's something else.
Its innards don't exist.
Nothing but pure onionhood
fills this devout onionist.
Oniony on the inside
onionesque it appears.
It follows its own daimonion
without our human tears.

Our skin is just a coverup
for the land where none dare to go,
an internal inferno,
the anathema of anatomy.
In an onion there's only onion
from its top to it's toe,
onionymous monomania,
unanimous omninudity.

At peace, of a piece,
internally at rest.
Inside it, there's a smaller one
of undiminished worth.
The second holds a third one,
the third contains a fourth.
A centripetal fugue.
Polypony compressed.

Nature's rotundest tummy,
its greatest success story,
the onion drapes itself in its
own aureoles of glory.
We hold veins, nerves, and fat,
secretions' secret sections.
Not for us such idiotic
onionoid perfections.

I agree with your thoughts!

Good thoughts, Son of Perdition!
I have found what works best for me is to try being 'mindful' and remind myself to 'live in the NOW'....that is IS now...not yesterday or tomorrow... not saying its easy, but it gets more so...a lot of it is a matter of intention and how you consciously direct your will.
This business of 'you can't help but worry' -- is not altogether true. Sometimes people worry because we have this idea that NOT to worry means one doesn't 'care' about the person or situation... that is something that needs to be examined honestly...
At least one CAN reduce the amount of stress and worry... I truly believe this.

Traveling light has never been our long suite, and things get a hold of us, long before we get a hold of them. When we examine the words "ownership" and "stewardship" side by side, we get a clearer picture of things. We should probably be good owners of ten things, and good stewards of the rest. I know that sounds drastic, but think about it. :)
