Trying Vegan again this week

I have done it a few weeks at at time before this but always have gone back to vegetarian or eating some meat at times. This week though I have stocked myself up with cherry tomatoes, roma tomatoes, mushrooms, 2# of of mini carrots, onions, yams, and a huge bunch of broccoli, 3 packages of bean burgers and bread and of course a big bottle of Wine!!

Lovely to hear that Ruthanne:) and I've lived the vegan lifestyle for almost ten years now so if you need any advice or suggestions, I'd be happy to help.

I've never bothered with the advice on veggie boards or other discussions, to get my blood work done, get my 'numbers', but just learned and read and read and learned and did what seemed to make the most sense out of all the information. But when I went into the clinic for something else, the doctor (who didn't know that I don't eat animal products) ordered a complete blood panel which included liver and kidney function, protein levels, B12 and all the rest, I was thrilled when at my next visit he said everything was perfect:eek:.

So yep, if you ever have a question, maybe I can help and I'd be thrilled.

I had hummus and crackers for a meal last night. I don't even think of regular meals really. I just eat when I feel the need. I know a lot of how to make proteins from grains combining with beans, lentils. I've been vegetarian and vegan alternatively for about 15 years now but I have had some short segments of having meat, too, in the last 5 years and I don't know why. Thanks for being there! :) Do you like olives? I really love greek olives and assorted olives and sun dried tomatoes and all that stuff they have at the olive bar at the store. I don't buy it very often but I love it. I bet it has a lot of salt in it, though.

That's exactly the best way to approach it. Eat when hungry. A satisfied stomach keeps your mind from pondering time-traditional meal-preparations, which then includes 'having a taste for something'... which probably inevitably has you thinking about a dish involving meat or fish.

Don't feel guilty about using bacon-bits occasionally. You're still a vegan by everyone's standards.

Thanks for your interesting comment.

Oh sure, most vegans eat pig flesh.

They certainly do here in Okieland Annie......you'll see them lined up at the BBQ joints waiting for the doors to open to get a rack of pork ribs. :)

Then they're not vegans. That's like Madonna claiming to be 'like a virgin' and we all agree that that wasn't true the first time she sang that one.

And then too, vegan's diet is only one part of the commitment to a compassionate lifestyle. Also involved is clothing and entertainment choices. Like last night, my husband who's watched me morph into a lifelong, forevermore committed vegan, found out that I won't wear wool and when I said it was because even the sheep that grow the wool (most of which comes from Australia) are horribly abused from the early days of their lives right up until the end, he was surprised. Most people aren't even aware of that. Same with angora.

And for the record folks here who love dogs, may I suggest that the next time you are considering a pair of leather gloves that happened to be made in China, they could in all likelihood be coming from dogs who have been brutalized horrifically before dying as they are often skinned alive. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/w...dog-leather-gloves-made-in-china-9934752.html (no horrific images)

Of course, in this era of everything being integrally connected, it's impossible to be 100% cruelty free (like plywood that goes into manufacturing houses has animal products in the glues I believe), but the point is to move away from animal use as much as possible.

To Debby but this week I am trying vegan again one day at a time.

Uh huh. A vegan at a BBQ joint? Tell me another one, Ike! :playful:

Annie it's probably the ones suffering from withdrawal symptoms eh ?

*Okie vegan ordering*.......hmmm, I believe I'll have a salad, some tofu and a veggie weenie.......oh yeah, give me a rack of those BBQ'ed pork ribs on the side. :)

All joking aside I applaud those that have chosen the vegan lifestyle but it's just not for me.......I always have been and always will be a carnivore.

LOL. I was vegan 6 months, vegetarian about 2 years, then pescatarian (fish ok) for about 8 years. I didn't eat beef or pork for about 20 years. Took me a very long time to miss meat. In fact, at first the sight of raw meat made me queasy.

I've never felt healthier than when I was a vegan and had also given up sugar. I didn't miss meat but did begin to miss eggs and cheese and milk chocolate which is why I switched to vegetarian.

Good for you Ruthanne, a healthy choice. I find it helps to have a good supply of favorite vegan foods, nuts and fruits that I love.

Good that you mentioned the nuts Cookie. I eat them constantly and the beauty is that not only do they satisfy the urge to crunch on something, but they're great for alleviating your craving for fats and hunger pains, they have a wealth of health benefits (like the omega 3's in walnuts). And you can use them to make all kinds of other goodies. Like I made a super dip for raw veggies out of soaked cashews, garlic and other spices! Or as a 'crust' for squares....

Well I for one hope that Ruthanne is happy on a 'plant' diet. It's healthier, it's 'kinder' and it's better for the environment. Who can argue with that:rolleyes:?

I was a pescatarian until 2006. I've been a 'flexitarian' ever since and so is husband. At home we almost always eat vegetarian (have switched to soy and almond milk as well). But when we have guests, or eat out we will eat meat.

Been having fun with stir fry. I put cooking spray in the frying pan and cut up mushrooms, an onion, a few baby carrots and cook them and wow were they tasty. Cooking veggies various ways adds variety, too. I have a steamer I can use, too. I was boiling veggies but found the veggies seem to lose some of their flavor that way.

I love nuts, too, but will eat way too many of them if I buy them so I haven't been getting any. And yes it's good with a little wine, too, if you wish. lol

I always get soymilk, too, but forgot to buy it Friday.

Stir fried or lightly steamed veggies are the best. What is your main source of protein now? My husband is the cook in our house and he makes various curries and chilis with lots of veg and with either beans, lentils, tofu, or Quorn. Although you'd have to find the vegan Quorn which is new. Otherwise, Quorn has egg in it so not vegan.

Well here's a little suggestion for you Ruthanne that is primarily health focused and protects your brain function. One walnut (two halves) provides all the omega 3's that you need for the day. As good as flax seed and more convenient because you don't have to grind them up to use. I keep a tub in the fridge and once a day I eat four halves (I love walnuts:)). You could buy just a little bag for medicinal purposes!

As for your mushrooms, I've tried a combination of onion salt with a teeny bit of oregano and pepper and that makes a most interesting flavour combination. You should give it a shot.

I have trouble stopping when I eat nuts, but I'm now in the habit of measuring almond slivers and/or walnut pieces into my salad. 10g of each are about 60 calories.
