I drink less than a glass of orange juice every day, and I only buy not from concentrate juice. But I do take a vitamin C supplement that also contains bioflavonoids, so that's helpful. Orange juice does have a naturally high sugar content, so diabetics have to be aware of that. Here's an article that says two glasses boost brain-power in the elderly.

Two daily glasses of orange juice 'boosts elderly brainpower': Significant improvements can be seen in less than two months, research shows

  • Scientists put the results down to chemicals called flavonoids – natural substances which occur in high levels in oranges
  • They are said to improve memory through activation of the part of the brain associated with learning and storing information
  • Researchers asked 37 volunteers to drink nearly a pint of orange juice every day for eight weeks
  • Participants – 24 women and 13 men aged 60 to 81 – saw significant improvements in brain function

Far too many calories in OJ to drink that much IMO... 112 in one cup.. 8 oz. so add an extra 224 calories, if you drink only two 8oz glasses a day. That's a a lot of calories spread out over 8 weeks.. and I'm thinking would result in a few gained pounds if a reduction in calories was not made to a persons regular intake to compensate.

I agree, way too many calories. Maybe they could distill out those flavonoid thingys and put 'em in a pill. Wonder how many calories in a flavonoid.:)

I love a glass of OJ in the a.m. especially not from concentrate, more convenient and even less expensive than fresh oranges. Gives a nice boost with breakfast. Sometimes I dilute 1/4 cup with sparkling or plain water and ice for a refresher in the afternoon. Better OJ than cake or cookies, calory-wise.

I often mix a small amount of juice with plain carbonated (seltzer) water too Cookie, healthy alternative to sodas.

I eat an orange or other citrus like tangerines, tangelos, grapefruit for breakfast probably 3/4 of the year, rest of the time berries or melon. always have OJ handy in case I go hypoglycemic. Would be easy to aim for 2 servings of OJ and/or an extra orange if it would fuel the brain cells.

I always drink a glass of orange juice with breakfast. My favorite used to be grapefruit juice but, surprisingly, it is not recommended for people taking a medication I am using. (Also, I usually get acid free juice; same price.)

My favorite, too. It's getting harder to find grapefruit juice in the stores.:( Probably for that reason..
