Two respected men, one Republican and one Democrat

These men have spoken. Pretty damn good instincts considering both have been gone a long while now.

“Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them.”

“Republicans approve of the American farmer, but they are willing to help him go broke. They stand four-square for the American home--but not for housing. They are strong for labor--but they are stronger for restricting labor's rights. They favor minimum wage--the smaller the minimum wage the better. They endorse educational opportunity for all--but they won't spend money for teachers or for schools. They think modern medical care and hospitals are fine--for people who can afford them. They consider electrical power a great blessing--but only when the private power companies get their rake-off. They think American standard of living is a fine thing--so long as it doesn't spread to all the people. And they admire of Government of the United States so much that they would like to buy it.”
Harry S. Truman

When Goldwater ran against Johnson, I didn't vote for him, but I later came to think of Barry Goldwater as a statesman in the true sense of the word. Truman was true to his roots in all his endeavors and greatly enjoyed giving the devil to members of the opposing party or anyone who criticized his daughter. A man who lived modestly and carried heavy responsibilities. I think it is somewhat unique that two Republicans envisioned and warned the American people of the dangers their party was leading the government and America into. Good post, Jim.

Yes! Eisenhower warned us of the threat of the military complex becoming to large. A Great man, Ike.

I think when future history books are written, Truman and Eisenhower...and maybe FDR...will be noted as the best Presidents of the 20th Century. Truman was probably the nearest thing this nation has ever had to being "From The People". He never had great wealth, but was blessed with a extraordinary amount of Common Sense....probably as a result of his working hard for every dollar he ever had. Eisenhower saw the dangers of war, and was more interested in rebuilding this nation after WWII...hence our Interstate System.

Barry Goldwater had a great knack for telling us "Like It Is", but few people back then...and even today...can accept Reality.

Don, I mostly agree with you but was stopped short by your "maybe FDR". Maybe?! The president who brought us out of the Great Depression and saw us through to victory in World War II? Maybe?!

The reason I put a "Maybe" on FDR is that I think WWII was a Giant Global Conspiracy...by Multiple national leaders....as the Only way to jerk the world economies out of the Great Depression. It wouldn't be the first time that leaders have resorted to war to jump start a badly failed economy. The Great Depression was so deep and lasting so long that it was pretty obvious that drastic measures were needed to rectify that mess...and what is more drastic than all out war? Now, I'm not saying that FDR and Hitler, and Hirohito were secretly plotting to start WWII, but I think that once the Axis powers began to act, the Allied powers were able to see how this could finally be the catalyst that got their economies moving forward again.

Call it my distrust of politicians...but I question the Real Motivation behind what comes out of the mouths of most politicians.

I could not agree more. He's probably the last of the "real people" presidents we'll ever have. The system has changed too much and common sense takes a distant back seat to pandering and media theatrics.

There is a neighbor down the road from us who restores cars as a hobby. A few years ago he brought home a 1965 Mustang and restored it over the course of a couple years. Its former owner was Barry Goldwater. Apparently Mr. Goldwater had an affinity for cars.

I wonder if Hirohito and Hitler were aware of this "Giant Global Conspiracy"? FDR was probably our greatest President in modern history...

Eisenhower is the first president I remember being aware of. My parents had these things called "Eisenhoppers" (plastic grasshoppers with wire legs with suction cups on them). You could push them on a flat surface and they'd eventually jump up, causing your mother to screech and the dog to run. Great fun! I'm pretty sure they were handouts form the Eisenhower campaign. Must have been his first campaign, because I was a very little kid.

I'd vote for Harry S. Truman in a heartbeat if he were running now.

I believe a recent poll of many historians put FDR right behind Lincoln as the greatest with Washington coming in third. I would agree with that assessment...
