Twas the first of the month, retirement calendar on screen…

Black white spaces everywhere, were all to be seen…

Filling in the blanks with events coming to mind…

They will not be blank long, I soon did find…

The first day grandson had a soccer game,

And I know he’ll be happy if Grandma and I came…

The next day is the second better pay the bills,

Followed by shopping to refill some pills…

Day four, five and six expect a visit from the other grandkids,

This puts relaxing right on the skids…

Then another ball game is coming, with the other grandson,

Don’t dare miss the action- don’t dare miss the fun…

The next week need groceries, let’s go out to eat…

Never forgetting a stop for a sweet treat …

Now time to watch granddaughters cheer for football,

The new grandson, we keep Thursdays is open for a call…

Every Month has a birthday party; we find this is so true,

Which day do you have free dad, let’s go to the zoo….

The car needs an oil change; stop at the library for a book…

Let’s go out to eat, have no time for the cook….

Dad, can you pick up the kids and then take them to school?

I’m kind of hurried and I know you’ve nothing to do…

And before you know it…it’s a new month once again..

And each day has something in the blank written in…

Don’t know if I coming or going, I’m getting kind of dizzy…

I think I need a job; being retired-well that’s way to busy….

RETIRED

Woke up this morning, left the gold watch in the drawer.

Rolled right back over, to sleep a little more.

When we did get up, filled the bird feeders,

Had my coffee out on the deck.

Thought I should get out of my PJ’s,

Then thought oh, what the heck.

Looked at the flower boxes,

Lots of weeds encroaching there.

Man, I need to trim the apple tree,

And cut down that old pear.

Maybe I’ll go golfing; I’d rather have a cup of tea,

Chasing that little ball is much too much work for me.

Later I’ll go to the mail box, pick up my retirement pay,

Then make a trip to the drug store, for the pill of the day.

No more counting casting, no more working on the line,

Going to get my honey-do-list done, for I got the time,

Should clean the eve troughs, hang the shutters up with care.

All that in good time, now gotta’ read the paper, in my rocking chair.
