U.S. suspends Mexican avocado imports on eve of Super Bowl

What the heck do avocados have to do with the Super Bowl? Why'd they make that connection? The game went ahead without freshly imported avocados; you can buy guacamole in little plastic tubs.

I couldn't read the article without subscribing for $4/mo. (it's not about the money)

Florida avocadoes
I agree Florida avocados are not as good, but there is a reason:

The biggest difference between a Hass avocado and a Florida avocado comes down to calories; Florida avocados are lower in fat and therefore have an overall lower calorie count. This may sound like a no-brainer, but Florida avocados are much milder in flavor due to their lacking in fat content.

I did not know that. Interesting!

I don't eat them anymore. A few years ago Kroger had Mexican ones on sale for 49 cents each. I bought several and got food poisoning from the first one I ate. Had to see a doctor and was sick for 10 days. Bad batch from Mexico the doctor said. So never tried one again. Used to love them but the very thought of it now brings back memories.

We like avocados, and usually have one 3 or 4 times a week with Supper. Our local stores are still well stocked, with no big increase in price, but I expect that may change in coming days/weeks.

Interesting article. Curiously, it fails to mention that the area where avocados are grown averages 64" of rain a year and that the water used by avocado trees doesn't just disappear. It returns to the local ecosystem. What little water is lost to Mexico within each avocado is meaningless against that area's rainfall.
At least for the moment I'll continue to enjoy avocados guilt-free.
