For those that don't speak British, a MOT is a required vehicle inspection that is carried out by private car repair shops. The Ministry of Transport regulations are quite detailed. I cannot quote the cost of that UK MOT inspection, but here in Ontario having a "mechanical safety inspection " done before you can sell a car, costs a set fee of $145 and covers 75 points of inspection and takes about 2 hours to complete. If the vehicle fails that inspection, the owner must take it to a different shop to have the repairs done. This is to prevent the first shop from making up repairs to get the added work.
The Ontario safety inspection certificate is only valid for 36 days from the date the inspection was done, and the form must be signed by the mechanic AND the shop owner. The person who is selling the car, and the buyer must go together to a Service Ontario office to complete the sale and the legal transfer of the vehicle ownership. The buyer will pay the cost of the transfer, and the cost of the sales tax calculated on the sale price of the vehicle at that time. They will both be issued a bill of sale by the Province of Ontario. JimB.
