Unbelievable Unemployment Story

Sorry in advance if this gets a bit long.

I was let go from my company due to Covid in June 2020. I've since retired, but I was lucky enough to collect Unemployment through September 2021. I'm glad I didn't voluntarily retire.

Seems like there have been a lot of fraudulent unemployment claims, so TX Unemployment asked me to verify my identity. The primary forms were Passport and Driver's License. Check. The second forms were an original Social Security card or W-2 or W-9 with my full Social Security number. Well, I didn't have my original Social Security card, and no W-2 or W-9 forms show the FULL Social Security number... only the last 4 digits. I tried to explain this to them to no avail. So, Unemployment sent me invoices to pay back what I had received.

I was able to obtain an authentic Social Security card. I had to enter every form of identification on a website. A couple of weeks ago I sat on a Zoom call and presented each form of ID in a camera. I had renewed my passport because it was expiring within 6 months, and the person on Zoom said she couldn't verify my identity because my new passport didn't match what I had entered on their site. I spent 3 hours correcting this.

I finally received notification today that my Unemployment claims were legitimate. I feel like I worked as hard to earn my Unemployment benefits as I did when I was actually working!

Sorry that you had to jump through all these hoops when you did nothing wrong.

The consolation is that those scamming the system won’t be able to just bs their way out.
