The photo was taken at the entrance to Katlian Bay in Sitka , Alaska .

The whale is coming up to scoop up a mouthful of herring ( the small fish
seen at the surface around the kayak).

The kayaker is a local Sitka dentist now nicknamed Jonah.

The whale was just around the corner from the ferry terminal and all the
kayaker could think of was: “Paddle Man–really fast!”

The whale’s mouth is fully open with the bottom half under the boat.

Some fools in kayaks and on longboards actually paddled out to be nearly killed by migrating grey whales here a couple months back. It's not nice to fool with Mother Nature. Had a surfing buddy who was what we might refer to as a hellman . . . wild and crazy he was . . . who lived up Hwy 1 where it's outside the bay and open ocean. He swam out into the traffic lanes of some whales headed South, dove down to see them and suddenly realized, "What the HELL am I doing HERE?!?!?!? Lessons learned.
