For me it was a toss up between franks and beans or spaghetti. Apricots were verboten in my company, because supposedly some guy was opening a can when they got
hit and a guy got killed

I'd like to say I opened a can of something in my foxhole, but I can't. I spent 4 years in the Navy and never stepped foot on a ship. I was stationed at the Naval Medical Center at Bethesda, MD, before all the merging of military hospitals. Their Thanksgiving Dinner was famous. We had Congressmen, and other VIPs coming for the dinner.

We had a working galley aboard our [LCU] landing craft, but we kept a supply of c-rats for just in case. I used to hit the cases of rats for the 4 cigarette packs(Lucky Strike, I believe), when I ran out of cigs.

Believe it or not, I liked the beef stew. Right out of the pouch (or can, depending) or warmed up, if I was lucky. It tasted better than some of that other crap that they tried to pass off as food.
