I was on a cargo ship the USS Brule akl28 which may have stopped at cat lai on trips between Saigon and Nha Be where we usually stayed when not up the delta. We often went up the Mekong to the border at Cambodia and down into the gulf of Thailand. We were the grocery store for most of the delta along with other cargo ships. Beer, pop, food, pig food, chicken wire and ammunition.
there is a web site that may have some more info:

I Was out of Newport, with the 5th heavy Boat C., 71st Trans Bn.(Army). While in port, we pushed container ships into dock, when running the Delta, we hauled goods on LCUs to Vung Tao, Vinh Long and Tra Vinh. When I was on the Y-100(Y Tanker) we hauled JP4 to the helo bases along the Cambodian border.
I don't recall hearing about a Vietnam Veterans day before.
