Vintage childhood February traditions…

With February here, it’s time to remember how we commemorated Valentine’s Day and perhaps Washington and Lincoln’s birthday when in elementary school. I can remember cutting out black silhouettes of Washington and Lincoln on construction paper, and of course those dreadful cheap pun-laden childhood valentines that we exchanged…

We made "valentine boxes" to take to school. You could get as fancy and elaborate as you wanted.

They were put on our desks and your friends put valentines in them.

It was always a contest to see who got the most valentines. It was hard on the kids who didn't get many to watch the popular kids get a lot and crow about it.

It seems like our moms had a box of food coloring and a cookie cutter for every occasion.

and don't forget those little "message hearts" candies that kind of tasted like soap...
I noticed a local grocery store is still selling them.
