Walking is key to Senior Health

I used to walk a lot but then I ended up getting a prosthetic left knee. After that, I tried to slowly do some walking again for the very reasons you mention in the OP. Not easy, so I started going to the in-door swim twice a week. I bought a ”ten visit” card so I go Tuesdays and Thursdays. I have only one visit left and was going to use it yesterday and then buy a new 10 visit card. But before I could make it I got a horrendous pain in my right knee and spent 11 hours at the hospital emergency room with morphine and x-rays. It was decided that I need another prosthetic knee but the waiting list can be up to 6 months. So, here I sit after one night of sleep, writing to you and wondering what the 🤬 I am going to do for the next six months. I have two crutches from that last operation but even with those, I can hardly take care of myself. The pain! Help me! 😰
Crap! I'm so sorry to hear about your knee issues. I've never had a knee replacement, but I've had chronic bursitis in my knees for years. They swell up and I can barely walk up/down stairs, so I know a bit of what you're going through. I wish I could help you. Medical assistance is ridiculous these days. 6 months?!

Not a healthy walk for this senior! ...

I am going to report her to the Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. She should be ashamed of herself for pushing her dog like that!

Thank you. I understand the difficulties with your knees. Our medical services didn't use to be this bad but it gets worse and worse.

Yes, I think I have what may be skin cancer on my leg. My doctor referred me to a dermatologist. I called to make an appointment today and they can't see me until January 17. :(
Maybe you're using the same medical facilities as I. :)

DH & I walk every afternoon. While he’s doing his exercises in the a.m., I go for a walk by myself. On a slow day I do 2 miles. Normally it’s at least 3 or 4. The winter challenge has started. Black ice, uncleared sidewalks, cold winds, miserably cold weather, etc, all known as winter in Canada. We only did 1 km of very slow walking because of the treacherous conditions one day last week. If nothing else, we got some fresh air.

There are many websites proclaiming the benefits of regular walking, especially for seniors. As seniors, a key to not degenerating, for those able, is Use It or Lose It, with regular walking outdoors, one of the few types of exercise that affects our whole bodies. The below is just one web link.

How often and much do you walk?
Where do you walk to within say a mile of your residence?
Do you go anywhere without driving a vehicle?
The wife and I average a little over a mile a day, usually in woodsy areas and in conjunction with a visit to a coffee shop. (Her cell phone keeps track.) Also -- several years ago I got into a discussion with my daughter about my affinity for a house with stairs -- she was opposed. I asked my doctor what he thought. He said that when I turned 80 I might fall down those stairs and break a hip, but without the stairs I might not make it to 80.

All hub and I have to do is step outside and we can walk and walk right around on our own driveway and on our property. We walk usually 3-1/2 to 4 miles each day. Love it. We walk our main walk during the day and than another mile after dinner.

No official reason to complain we can't walk due to the traffic that's for sure. It nearly always
makes you feel and sleep better.

I probably average once a week, 3 to 5 miles. I go to the gym to lift more often. I find lifting to be easier on my knees, walking every day is harder. I like walking.

I walk a number of places from home. My favorite is to go up the hill to an irrigation canal and follow it, can get as many miles as I want that way.

Most of my walking is from home.

I agree walking is good for you, may try a little more, see how hard I can push the knees.

I don't walk often enough. I don't like walking outside, trying to get some speed in my stride and having to stop for traffic every block. When I'm staying at my timeshare in Atlantic City, that's when I do the most walking. I hit the boardwalk and have walked up to 5 miles a day.

I started watching Leslie Sansone walking videos and did that for awhile, then stopped. Thanks for the reminder that I need to get back to it. I walk to the supermarket, downtown, post office and walked to get my COVID test the other day. I'm in a very walkable area so none of those things are too far, but it's walking just the same.

I believe in a good walk to get energized ... I learned recently, that my daily walks are 1 1/2 miles each.
That is a complete revolution around my apartment complex ... and I do this 3 times a day.

These are my dog walks, w/ a doggy stroller. He walks most of the way, but enjoys hopping in the stroller for a ride at times ... especially when we have hot/muggy weather.

Now, that looks like fun!
