Want to get rid of those annoying ear worms?

Having a song stuck in your head on a loop affects almost everyone.
So exasperating, keeping me awake, coming back, non stop for hours.
Have you noticed that though the song goes on endlessly in your head, we never verbalise the song?
"Interesting research has suggested that chewing gum is the best way to remove an earworm,"
Dr Tim Byron from the University of Wollongong's School of Psychology explains,
"When a song was on internal loop, the machinery in our brains compelled us to sing and make a noise, but did not quite send the message to our mouths".
"So when you have a song stuck in your head, ultimately your mouth wants to sing it, even if you aren't letting it out,"
"By chewing gum, you're distracting that brain passage by activating your mouth and jaw for another purpose."
He also suggested interrupting your mouth by repeating certain sounds such as Ta or Ti.
Get out of my head

Interesting observation. I used to have that happen to me when I worked at a particular business that played the same annoying songs all throughout the day. Even though I hated the songs they would get programed into my brain and I couldn't get them out. It was cruel and unusual punishment, especially since I have spent most of my life working as a professional musician.
It was a form of brainwashing which I'm sure was scientifically researched as a way to make people happy and want to spend more money.
I complained regularly and eventually got the playlist changed to something more tolerable. The earworms went away. But it only lasted for about two weeks until I got an email from corporate telling me they had certain guidelines to follow. The muzak came back, and so did the earworms.

You person you. :ROFLMAO:
I knew there would be one in every crowd, which is why I had the sound muted. :ROFLMAO:
Yep, it's me. Earworms are tickly prickly little devils, like an itch you can't scratch. I finally had to quit that job to get away from them. I can hear so much better now. And even see better too.

When I wake up in the morning and start to feel alive a song gets going in my head and usually sticks around until around noon. I don't mind it as it is not so severe as bretrick's.

I don't know if it works with earworms, but the German philosopher Immanuel Kant once had to dismiss a servant called 'Lampe'. He wanted to forget him. What did he do? He wrote on a sheet of paper "Forget Lampe!" and put it on his bed table. Every morning after getting up he read the message. But I doubt that he was successful and forgot his servant :ROFLMAO:

The best advice is simply to listen to the song. That will get rid of it. Don't know the scientific reasoning for it but it seems to work.
