We finally have power!

It’s been a looooong week! 😣🥶😭

Close to 300,000 people lost power and there are still around 90,000 people still waiting for their power to be restored. Our Mayor declared a local state of emergency, and Trump approved a federal Emergency Declaration for Tennessee on January 24, 2026, to assist with protective measures.

The Tennessee Department of Health reported at least 13 weather-related deaths across various counties in Tennessee due to the ice and cold weather, as of Jan 28, 2026. Causes included carbon monoxide poisoning, falls, heart attacks.

A lot of Nashville looks like a war zone. Trees have actually exploded due to the cold (sap freezes and expands) and countless trees have fallen due to ice accumulations.

Thia is the first day our temperature is predicted to rise above freezing, but will drop back down to the 20’s and teens again till mid week next week. All but one of my clients still has no power, and the area in which they live (Belle Meade, old-money wealthy area) is predicted to be without power for at least another week. Clients have gone to their Florida homes or are staying in hotels.

All our family members have had their power restored thankfully, with little damage. Our neighbor’s water heater froze, a friend’s home flooded due to pipe a bursting, another had a tree come down on the front of her house.

Damage is widespread and severe and it will take many weeks to recover.

@Ronni Did you have high winds during that? I noticed here though freezing temps we didn't get the wind
that usually comes with it to make conditions worse. So it was definitely more barrable here than the last ice storm we had.

I sure hope your area gets a nice weather break and some warmth to aid in the repairs that have to be done.

What an ordeal. You got the weather we feared in Atlanta. I hope you managed to keep warm and fed, Good to see you up and around.

You had plans to deal with all of this. Do you have anything that you thought was most important and other things that you might do differently.

One day was slightly windy but otherwise the air was pretty still, as long as you don’t count the continuous crack of trees and limbs breaking and the boom of transformers exploding.

What an ordeal to go through.

I followed the outage issues across the country at PowerOutage.US . .. of course, having access/power helps to pull it up.

Good question. Having a gas stove was huge! Being able to light it manually then have hot meals, hot water, warmth was a game changer. I’ve had several friends say they’re going to switch to gas ranges after this because of the huge benefits to be derived from it during a power outage.

We almost lost our tankless water heater (mounted outside). We made sure all the faucets were turned to a drip to help keep the pipes from freezing. Several hours into the power loss, I had a brain fart and tried to turn on the hot water. Doh! 😖 Anyway when I did, zero water. Tried the other hot water faucets, same thing. Ron grabbed my hair dryer and ran a cord from the generator to heat the outside unit. It must have barely started to freeze because within 5 minutes the hot water started to run again, cold of course but flowing. Crisis averted.

Our neighbors weren’t so lucky. They came back from their friends’ home where they were staying to find water spewing from the outside tankless water heater which they’ll now have to replace. That would have been us too. Those units aren’t cheap!

Old fashioned hot water bottles!! Provided you have a way to heat water, being able to throw them in the bed in our bedroom which was siting at around 37 degrees made a huge difference. It made getting into bed a toasty experience instead of the deep chill of almost frozen sheets!! We had 7 layers on the bed too.

If you have a generator, make sure your heavy duty cords are in good repair, or even better, new. Ron has a lot, many of which are 20+ years old, plus a recently purchased new one … not cheap, over $100, but it made a difference. On the older cord, the generator kept cutting out, the plug was almost too hot to touch. Switched cords, the plug stayed cool and generator didn’t cut out again!

There are more things but they’re not coming to mind right now. As I think of them I’ll post.

Wow, that's devastating Ronni. Glad you finally have power. I can't imagine being in a situation like that, so many suffering. Wishing the best and safety for your family and friends....hugs.
