Weather-Predicting Groundhog Dies Just Before Groundhog Day

'Milltown Mel' crosses the rainbow bridge.

It's Groundhog Day, but Milltown, New Jersey, isn't celebrating this year. "Milltown Mel," the town's weather-prognosticating groundhog, died within days of the holiday. "We Wranglers are sad to report that Milltown Mel recently crossed over the rainbow bridge," the groundhog's official Facebook page announced Tuesday. "Considering the average lifespan of a Groundhog is about 3 years, that is not such a shock, but Mel left us at a tough time of year, when most of his fellow groundhogs are hibernating...so no babies will be available to replace him until this Spring. We tried everywhere to get a stand-in, but to no avail!" Hence Wednesday's decade-old event is canceled, NBC News reports.

That does not bode well. At least Punxsutawney Phil is still chugging along in Pennsylvania. There’s no shortage of groundhogs in the fields here, or their corpses on the roads. They may think that they know weather, but they sure don’t understand traffic. Heck, one occasionally traipses across my backyard. Perhaps we could ship Milltown another rodent… 🦫

We got the news here last night. We will have his replacement in the spring sometime.

So sad about the NJ groundhog. I saw the video of the Punxsutawney celebration. Huge crowd! So fun to have that traditional event.

No ground hogs here today in the middle of Canada. It's -30 C (-22 F for our American friends). We have so much snow that the snow removers have a problem figuring out where to put all that white stuff. No Ground hog in his right mind is going to come out today; not around here!

You mean nobody In New Jersey noticed that it wasn't Mel, who died, it was his cousin, Ralph. ;) They do look alike. And who in the hell in New Jersey knows the difference? Couldn't find another stand-in in the entire state, huh?
