WEBP images

What is it with these WEBP images that are becoming so common? I constantly have to use the Microsoft Paint program to convert them to JPG or GIF to be usable. Even my photo editing program (Paint Shop Pro) doesn't support WEBP images. It may be a new technology but if it's not accessible to existing programs, what's the point? It's just frustrating.

"Over the last year, Google has shifted the Chrome browser such that anytime you save an image file, it wants to default to the WebP format.
This was done because the WebP format makes the image files roughly 25% smaller. That reduction isn't the actual image size, but the size of the file that is saved. "
This article wants you to install an extension to Chrome.

As @Pinky pointed out, it's just easier to use the snipping tool to capture the part of the screen you want to save as an image file.

On my Android phone, I just use screen capture button combination. Then you can crop out what you don't want showing using the tools that appear when you view the resulting file.

Ok, I figured out how to make the selection I want but then it goes to my "clipboard" and I can't see my clipboard (don't have access) so I don't know where to go from there. Sorry, I'm usually better at this stuff, but for some reason I'm drawing a blank on this.

@OldFeller Ok, I think I have it now. I believe my problem was that I was using Snip and Share instead of Snip and Sketch. Snip and Share just kept going to clipboard with no other option. Anyway, I finally got it to work. Thanks!

I have a Windows PC and I also use (Paint Shop Pro). I use the click print screen button on my keyboard and then paste it into PSP using the "Paste As New Image Button". Can't get much simpler than that.

My version of Paint Shop Pro is a little old and it doesn't support WEBP images. There's a big long list of image extensions that it accepts but WEBP isn't one of them. I don't think WEBP existed at the time of my version of PSP. But I do use PSP for editing a lot of other images.

Additionally:
Convert WebP to JPG on Windows
  1. Click the Start menu, then find and open the Paint app.
  2. Open the WebP image you want to convert (find it in File > Open or drag the file into the Paint window)
  3. Choose File > Save As > JPEG picture to save the file as a JPG. Then indicate a folder to save your converted image to.

I use Gimp for photo editing in Linux. Gimp is available for Windows and macOS as well...https://www.gimp.org/downloads/
