I was in 4-H, but with my horse, so nothing had to be sold at the livestock auction at the end of the season. I always felt sorry for the kids who had cattle or pigs that they had worked with all year, and knowing that they would be sold to be butchered and eaten.
I really enjoyed being in 4-H, and all of us who had horses learned a lot about caring for our horses and training them from our 4-H leader.
I started with a colt that was born from my mare that I usually rode, and worked with her on basic training in 4-H until she was old enough that I was able to ride her .
We were in the drill team, and also rode in the horse shows and parades.
My kids all had ponies when they were growing up, and they were riding before they were even old enough for 4-H, but once they were able to join, then they had several years in 4-H with their horses.
This is my daughter, about age 5, after winning a ribbon at the horse show with her 1/2 Arab pony, Hot Chocolate.
