We're Walmart people.

In 1999, I had a chance to visit London, and 1 day in Paris. It was so strange everybody knew we were Americans. We weren't dressed any differently, or anything. But before we opened our mouths, they knew we were Americans. For years, I couldn't figure out how they knew. We didn't realize it, but it is very easy to identify Americans. We were the only ones 40 pounds overweight. Just think about it. Who do you imagine is walking the aisles of Walmart at 2 AM? That's what the world sees as Americans. In 2016, sports writers at the Rider's Cup, wrote that Americans were "Fat, stupid, greedy, classless bastards". British mags have stories about their teenage girls are starting to get fat like Americans. There's articles about why the French don't have obesity problems like the Americans. The Daily Mail released a survey about what Brits think of the US-"Dumb, obese and very patriotic".

Both my girlfriend and myself still are 40 lbs. overweight. So I'm not waving my finger at you fat people. It's us. And it's not a nice portrait of us.

Yikes, that's some description. I wish I didn't know those people.

The Walmarts here began closing at midnight some time ago. Too many tweakers roaming the aisles.

I do an annual 2-3 week trip to various parts of the UK. It's still pretty obvious. Yes, the world is starting to put on weight, but when you go to Europe, yes, there is little obesity. A lot of people walking, more active, more fit. I've always seen a greater divide because so many American tourists are 'poor travelers'. I find them to be too loud, outspoken, somewhat rude for American society but downright rude for British society.
A small example (of course, there are always exceptions) --- riding on the trains and the tube in London. They are overwhelmingly quiet. If you ride mass transit, or long-distance trains in this country, generally pretty loud. In Chicago, they had to create no-cellphone cars on some commuter lines. I had the classic stereotype on a train trip from Cornwall back to London. There was an American couple who spent 2 hours talking to a British couple sharing all their family info, pictures (on their phone), their 'amazing' trips, etc., very loudly and everyone on the train car knew their intimate details. They just wouldn't shut up.
Does that make them 'Walmart people'?

I think part of the reason there's less obesity is the food is healthier. European countries generally provide oversight that prevents widespread use of harmful chemicals in their food. I'm convinced I don't have an RDA for Roundup.

I honestly can't say I give much of a rip what people in the UK think of Americans. Sure, they like to go online and tell us, but it's not something that means diddly squat to me or anyone I know.

HOWEVER, the idea of Brits calling out Americans for being obese is almost laughable.

Then there's their teeth and their food. But, never mind :eek:nthego:

We live in a rural area where there are dozens of huge poultry farms. These farmers have found ways to shorten the production cycles down to half, or less of the time it takes chickens and turkeys to mature, naturally. They do that by adding substantial amounts of steroids and growth hormones to the feed. I am sure that those "additives" are still active when we consume the meats....and contribute to the epidemic of Obesity. Many of these chemicals are Not allowed in the food grown in Europe...could there be a relationship???

The data at the CDC web-site shows that over 30% of our health care costs are Obesity related. If this nation ever got serious about controlling our health care needs and costs, that would be a Prime place to start. If a person visits any of the many web sites that compare health care and its associated costs, by nation, the U.S. ranks waaaay down the list....with most of the nations of Europe showing the healthiest people, and the lowest health care costs.

Nope no hormones or steroids.
Chickens are fed a diet consisting of wholesome grains like corn and soybeans - along with nutritional supplements such as vitamins and minerals. Contrary to some myths, growth-enhancing additives such as hormones or steroids are never used. In fact, they are prohibited under federal law.

This myth has continued for decades about bad teeth since about the last war I think. In fact the worst teeth I've ever seen are so called 'red necks'' in the USA... ( excuse me if that's an offensive name but that's the truth)... decades ago, dental health, no fluoride in the water, nor Dentists were very good here, plus the cost of dental care was prohibitive in my parents day ( dental health unlike our medical health is not free) ...that has long changed...although we still pay for dental treatment,

as for our food I think you'll find we put a lot less harmful ingredients in our animals and less harmful additives in our food than the USA...

No-one cares whether you care about your health compared to ours.. , many of our younger generation are beginning to catch up with the USA and becoming extremely overweight through less exercise , and junk food... that's agreed.. but as you say...never mind huh?

You couldn't be more correct , that's exactly how we are, and how we view many American tourists... not all of course, but certainly enough for them to be the butt of many jokes...

I never said I don't care about my health, and you have no idea who does/does not care about my health. This thread isn't about my health. Look again - what I said upthread and what I'm saying again now is that I don't give a rip what the UK thinks about Americans. I also said they love to come online and tell us and make comparisons, as you've shown time and time again.

There might be people in the US who care what people in the UK think of them. I'm just saying that doesn't apply to me or to anyone I know. I also have no desire to go on UK forums and rant about it.

I don't care about what they say fuzzybuddy and you shouldn't either. Every country has ignorance, obesity and bigmouth classless people and you don't have to look far to find them. I shop at Walmart and have met the nicest people there. Somebody who is overweight can be found in any store in any country and what it says on their scale doesn't show the worth of their hearts, minds and souls. And since when is being patriotic shameful? I love America and am proud to be an American. We are a strong and great country that has helped so many around the world in so many ways and we should never forget it. Ignore these trifling insults they are garbage

Thanks for this info. It was "news to me."

Antibiotics are a far bigger problem than hormones or steroids.

When I meet somebody, American, British, European,
African or South American, they are all in this place
where I live, I never judge them by their size, but I
do judge them by their personality!

There may be a medical or genetic reason for anybody
being obese, there is of course laziness.

Right now I would probably be classed a clinically obese,
though I don't look it because of mt build.

Be nice till you know more, obesity should be treated as
an illness and not as a lifestyle choice.

Mike.

I don’t think there’s much argument in regard to those living in the contiguous 48 are, on average….well…..ef aey tee

Hey, we have sought, pursued ‘happiness’
That, for many (thank you, TV commercials) was pursuing a life of ease…based around good food…in a box, instant,
or in a bucket by the advice of a kindly old colonel, the Santa Clause of chikin.

And making earning a living something less than by the sweat of our brows

Then, some time ago (Kennedy administration?) we looked at ourselves, pointed, admonished
Charles Atlas
Jack Lalanne (spell cheque)
Many others, led the way
Gyms became vogue for the masses, not just Joe Palooka

And here’s where I get a bit incredulous
We have gone from that life of ease
To garnering a resolve to not be that guy, that gal
By
Going to a gym in our off hours
Getting on a tread mill, timing ourselves, sweating, like hogs, like huge overfed rodents…for hours...treading
And
Get this
Paying for it!
It’s a complete reversal!
Working hard to not work hard, to have time
To work hard

Of late, the focus has been on food
This too has gone the other way
Not just basic nutrition (push away from the table a bit sooner, fat boy)
But close scrutiny of what we’re feeding on
Veganism has come to be, not just vegetarianism, but
Veeeegun….izm
I don’t even want to know the difference

Why?

Because people of ease have nothing better to do than look at each other, themselves, compare
Take ‘selfies’
In bathrooms, no less (never been able to figger that one)

The funniest thing of all (a bit off topic) is texting
We’ve all worked so hard to make communication 'instant'
Then
Poking tiny buttons
On a tiny device
To say
‘Hi’
Or type a code like message about what yer doing this minute

I made a poster on this;

This, folks, for me, is entertainment

I have more fractured thoughts on this subject, but
well
breakfast is smellin' mighty good
mighty good

I was once upon a time one of those people roaming the Wal-Mart aisles at 2:00 AM -- seeking Pepto Bismol for a sudden gastrointestinal unpleasantness. Yuck!

I think when Burger King, KFC and some of the other fast food companies hit Europe their waist lines started expanding too. Not all of course, but some.

As far as Wal-Mart, mine is open 24 hours but we don't drive after dark so I can't tell you what goes on there at that time.

I'm not sure about other Americans but when I was in Europe I was my usual quiet, kind, sweet self. I did go in a store in Sweden by myself to buy toilet paper and came out with a big pack of paper towels by mistake! I think that was a conspiracy though, why did they have pictures of tall green trees on the wrapper of paper towels??
