What about the zoos?

Conversation with daughter, we bought a zoo pass in February and they closed in March. Now, we get a letter that our pass will only be good another three months and they are still closed. And, due to the virus, they will remain closed.

The letter said the small zoo could not afford to refund anyone’s money and asked for donations since they are having trouble feeding the animals. I never thought about this effect of the virus. The zoos get money for their operations from people visiting the zoo. No visitors equals very little money,

While they do get donations clearly donations are not enough. The animals eventually may have to be killed as most zoos will have the same issues. Our zoo is open by appointment and limits the visitors. All indoor exhibitions are closed. So how is your zoo doing, do you know?

Not sure about the zoo, but our local Natural History Museum (of which we are members) is having the same kind of trouble. We're reupping our membership in support of them even though it's unlikely we will be able to get there anytime soon.

@CarolfromTX asks a very good question.

My reply would be considered political so I can’t answer but I am sure you watch the news sometimes and know the answer. @StarSong

I hope a lawsuit is initiated in order to recoup people's money.

As far as I'm concerned, taking people's money and failing to provide services/entertainment attached to those monies is theft.

Just checked. The Los Angeles Zoo is open. Masks are required, tickets must be purchased online, in advance. Credit card only when on-site for food and other purchases.

The LA zoo is huge and I think government, tax, supported. There are many small zoos and the roadside petting zoos, of course, which have no government aid. The road side zoos depend on people traveling, which is not happening.

Once you figure in the amount of people out of work, I think even the larger non state supported zoos might eventually be in trouble as donations lessen and grants go away.

Well, regal theaters took my money as I joined their club, as did a lot of others. They have been closed and I doubt their will be any refunds. Luckily I got the plan where you pay monthly and they suspended taking those payments. I doubt the people who paid yearly will get their money back.

I hope people learn a valuable lesson from all of this, keep your money in your own pockets until such a time that you need it.

Same goes for all of the jetsetters who purchased airfare, and are now out hundreds, and in some cases, thousands of dollars.

Do you think you are becoming a bit negative? 😂. No one knew a virus would come. It was a really good deal, allowed us to see a ton of movies that would have been too expensive otherwise. I am sad about what happened.

This pandemic came out of left field. Many people had purchased airfare (myself included) for planned vacations. That hardly qualifies us as jetsetters.

People who love animals enough to support their local (non-profit) zoos with annual memberships are unlikely to begrudge that money going for the animals' food and care, merely because they themselves cannot visit that zoo.

Not at all, in fact, that's one of the biggest problems I see our world and society today, everyone pretends all is rosy even when it's not.

I do not see it as a problem, so we will have to agree to disagree. People who can find the roses, among the thorns, are America’s greatest assets, and always have been. The early settlers, who marched westward, and settled our country saw roses.

The virus is certainly one of the many challenges we face, but, overall, it is still “a rosy” world. I see the glass as half full, seems you see it as half empty. I hope you change your viewpoint, it looks so much better from my side. 😍
