What am I missing?

A news announcer proclaimed the other day that we just experienced the greatest economic downturn since the Great Depression! How come I never noticed? How come there are so many unfilled job openings? No line-ups at bread kitchens? No one riding trains to look for a job elsewhere? Honestly, was there a depression and I slept through it?

According to The US Treasury:
The size of the U.S economy is now over 5 percent above its 2019 level.
Core inflation in the United States is now lower than in many major advanced economies.
The U.S. labor market recovery has been exceptionally strong.

You're okay to go back to bed.

Yes, you missed something. What you mostly missed, I'd guess, is that the world isn't revolving around you. Perhaps you're financially sound and have managed to skip over current trends, and that's great. But homelessness is rising, tent cities can be found not in California, not in the US generally, but the world over. Drug addiction is increasing as people try to escape their predicaments. Food prices are rising. Those using food banks (your bread line) are up in all developed countries. A lot of jobs don't pay enough to live on. For example, if you earn minimum wage in London, you can't live alone in London. The gap between the haves and have-nots is getting wider.

But when you're sitting still, you can miss the changes. I honestly feel we're at a dangerous tipping point. Social Media is like a cancer. We've poisoned ourselves. Yet here I sit, quite comfortable. But here's the thing, as an oldster, it's not about me. It's about those that follow. I'm not proud of the world I left to others. It's going to be harder for them, not easier.

How well things are going ..............often is a glass half full or empty situation depends on how you look at it....... and your current situation.

Now for reports and media .........depending on where you look they picture is wonderful or the sky is falling........statistics and comparisons are meaningless as most pick and choose or twist points to show....

Most people view how it is going by either their own pocketbook or those around them....

I was looking at jobs 1 year ago........ more GOOD jobs and better pay........ i just saw one i looked at before.... now offering less money ....... meaning the bid for people has slowed ........ also they are tightening up taking the expected skills ..... speak to recruiters and it has slowed way down for them.

my Son in law has a job that is hard work and they go through people ... people not putting in the expected effort but now the bunch they have are doing the work .... SIL used to get more OT etc when slackers were ' all they could find or get" now he is home on time as people start pulling their weight.

I agree compleely and am repentant! But these things have developed so slowly over the past thirty years or so that I took a depression to mean a sudden and dramatic downturn in the economy. I have, for a long time, boiled with resentment at the fact that wages have not kept pace with the increase in the cost of living! The rich get filty rich while the rest max their credit cards!

There are always people struggling. Rents and property are going up. With property prices rising, more people can't buy. More apartments going up so those people keep giving their money to already rich investors instead of buying a home. I still can't find a decent mobile and I refuse to buy and old one.

I only feed myself and cats. People with kids, not so easy. I'll live on bread and pasta if I had to for a time. I did spend 28 dollars at the farmers market this morning so I'm not eating just bread and pasta.

Lettuce, tomatoes, strawberries and 3 baskets of raspberries!
