What are the food prices like in your area?

Gaer

"Angel whisperer"
I just needed tortillas.
Grabbed a pack of 10, which cost me $1.09 last month.
Cashier rang them up and said, "$6.79".
"Oh no, I only got the tortillas."
"$6.79!"

Well, It was embarrassing, but I told her "Sorry, i won't won't pay that for 10 tortillas."
She had to call the office to clear the register.
People were waiting.
More embarrassment.
Apologies to everyone. Ducked out of the store.

What would you have done? Are the local food prices escalating where you live?

I would not pay $6.79 for ten tortillas; that is crazy. You may have to learn how to make them ~ homemade @Gaer .

I pretty much go with the flow (weekly sales) when it comes to veggies and fruit. Not much has changed.

Red cabbage 88c/lb
Zucchini & yellow squash 97c/lb
Red bell peppers 98c/each
Kale & collard greens 98c/bunch
Portobello mushrooms 1.39/lb

Bananas 49/lb
Large sweet mangos 48c/each
Strawberries 99c/lb (this week)
Red cherries (over the past 2 months): 1.97, 1.48, 1.69/lb
Roma tomatoes 99c/lb
Hass avocados 50c/each

All pretty much normal prices.

I picked up a clump of celery in the same store and it was $7.59!
I still have to shop there as it's the only grocery in town.
I am checking the prices more carefully before putting things in my cart!
I noticed a few things are staying the same price, but it's not the things you need!
Well, Fasting a few days each week is good for you!

OMG, $7.59 for the clump of celery?!?

I have noticed an increase in many food items. Too many to list. I am just buying less groceries. Avocados are $1.99 each; ridiculous. I haven't bought any tortillas so have not noticed a change in their price. Why are they increasing the prices? Why now when we are going thru such a tough time due to the pandemic?

I really need to pay attention the next time I go to the store. Usually in a hurry to get on to something else, I am not a good shopper when it comes to pricing.

The bolded is the problem. A single grocery store means no competition which leads to higher prices.

I wouldn't have ducked out of the store...you were right to say Nope, sorry.

Our grocery money isn't going nearly as far as it did just a few months ago. We're buying bags of beans instead of canned, but cans of tomatoes instead of fresh. Really sux when 5 frozen dinners is cheaper than 1 pound of ground beef.

Worst of all.... ~heavy sigh~ ....we're buying the cheap toilet paper! 😭

That is sad.... 5 frozen dinners being cheaper than a pound of ground beef. It is unreal.

Our prices in New Jersey are sky high and the quality has gone down. By now we should be getting some local produce at a lower price but they are charging more because they say it is local.
Anytime there is a whisper of a shortage because of weather or covid reasons the price is jacked up the following week.
If an item does go on sale there is a limit of one or two if we are lucky.

We did our grocery shopping a couple of days ago. I usually just push the cart while the wife is picking up the items....and I just browse, looking for "specials". To me, it looks like most items are up at least 10%...or more...from what they were last year. And the prices on things like meat, eggs and fresh produce seem to fluctuate substantially, from week to week.

Noooooooo...I;d rather live on bananas, and oats for every meal than have to use cheap toilet roll...

I have been ordering groceries online for awhile here in Houston at Walmart. So far things are about the same. In fact I ordered a carton of potato salad for 1.79 which is a small size. The shopper brought a one pound size but charged me the 1.79. Those shoppers are in such a hurry they don't look at sizes that are ordered. In past orders I have gotten large sizes of minced garlic and spices that I did not order. I called and they said to just keep it and don't worry about it. So I shared the extra with a friend that has a family and cooks a lot. The Kroger ads for produce so far do not show big increases. Of course we have Walmart, HEB, Aldi, Food Town and Arlans Market. A lot of competition here.
