What do you do to improve your short term memory?

I was told this trick several years ago, and I find it works.

Suppose you have to return some light reading book to the library today. Simply point at something, the book or something else and say in a normal voice “Return Nuclear Physics for Dummies to the library today.” Do this three times. The physical action of pointing plus vocalizing the task seems to really help.

I have little pieces of paper with different words written on them. I will pick 3 every morning, read them and say them to myself. Then maybe an hour later or so I will say them and then look at them to see if I am right. Then hours I will repeat again.

I also work in workbooks and memory is a good part of it. The one I am working on presently is for improving my grammar.

I had a head injury when I was 34 that left lasting effects on the part of my brain that deals with numbers. Oddly, I have a particularly hard time remembering dates, so there are multiple calendars in my house. My wife fills in all the special days for me.

Anyway, for therapy, I play solitaire every day. It's helped a lot for years and years, but over the past several months it's been taking longer and longer to finish a game. Makes me feel stupid, but I still think it's good therapy.

I'm getting foggy about other stuff, too, so I've been sticking up notes for myself. I'm looking at one right now that says "Mel 11:30am." Oh yeah, I have a lunch date!

Another crossword puzzle person here. The most amazing thing about doing these crossword puzzles is the fact that I can remember words that I thought I had long since forgotten. The brain is a funny thing.

Just my daily routine with the horses makes me remember things, because I am OCD about making sure the gates are locked, the water is shut off, things like that.

all my life I have had a bit of a short term memory loss that I chalked up to trying to remember too many things. between raising a child, going to work, taking care of the horses, the house yada yada yada. My short term isn’t any worse than it was years ago, which is a good thing —. I think.

My biggest downfall is misplacing items, so I try to have certain places for everything and not change where they are kept.

Notes are my main resource to not forget things. Those go on a pad on my desk which I look at daily. But I'm going to a dinner tomorrow and have to take a dessert. I've already bought it. To insure that I don't forget it, I've left a note on top of my wallet, which will force me to remember when I get ready to leave tomorrow.

I can also come up with words I didn't realize I knew. Yes, the brain is amazing.

I also do this.

I have also been known to put the keys in the refrigerator next to the serious horse medicine, if I need to give something to one of the horses.

That has brought some really weird “you need help” looks on some people‘s faces. I generally let them stew on that a minute or two, while I’m looking at them with a deer in the headlight look, before I laugh and say you should know me better; the keys are there so I don’t forget the medicine. If I can’t find my keys, I look in the refrigerator and by gosh, there they are next to the medicine the horse has to have, and that usually shuts everybody up.😂😂

I am a crossword nut..I love crosswords.. Now I live on my own , I have a crossword puzzle book in the loo... and even if I'm just going for a quick visit I'll fill in a few clues... ..I particualr like Cryptic puzzles

On this forum I play word games every day..... and another thing I do to keep the short term memory sharp as I can.. because really I have a terrible memory... but I will watch a TV show ... or a Youtbe video..of say a real life court case.. sometime in the evening...

Later when I got to bed, just as I'm getting ready for sleep.. I try to recall the names of the accused.. the defence, and prosecution lawyers ..the judge.. the witesses names etc...

....with the tv show... I try to remember all the characters names that I saw in that particular episode, and then match them to their real names...

ie.......Sam Malone - Ted Danson

Rebecca Howe... Kirstie alley

Cliff Claven - John Ratzensburger

Woodie Boyd - Woodie Harleson-

..and so on.. ......different show every evening...

When I wake up the first thing I recite is my Social Security number. I do a match 3 game on my tablet, keep a calendar book for the whole year, have a phone book, password book, don't use the phone to save things.

I've got to where I put my grocery list under notes on my phone. Too many times, I've made a grocery list out, laid it on the table, and forgot it. Makes me so mad at myself!

I play Words With Friends. I also do trivia. You Tube has hundreds of trivia questions.
that's another thing I do...play trivia quizzes.. altho' I've had to wade through a lot that had wrong answers before I found a couple that seem to be really good ones... and save them to my favourites...
