What event in your life stands out in your memory?

I wanted the best care available when my first wife had our first and only child (we were both 21) so I made arrangements for her to deliver in a small, private birthing hospital.

I was sitting outside the delivery room and all of a sudden I heard the bloodcurdling scream, "HONEY !!".......thinking the worst and concerned only about her I stormed into the delivery room and went straight to her without even giving the child a second glance (the umbilical cord had not yet even been cut) and all the while the people in the delivery room were yelling for me to leave but after a few choice words from me and my 'look from hell' they realized that I wasn't leaving till I was damn good and ready.

After a few moments with me she calmed down and assured me that she was alright and for me to go back outside and let them finish and wait till they called me.

I've been in some really hairy situations in my life but when she screamed, "HONEY" that was the most terrified that I've ever been.....at that moment I was just so scared that something had gone wrong and that I was going to lose her.

Sharing that was a little difficult for me to relive. :(

January 28th., 1986 the Challenger's shuttle launch blew up killing it's seven crew members. It was only 70 some seconds after it took off when we saw it saw it blow up. My son and we're watching the launch on TV when it happened. We were so shocked that we looked at each other as if to say, "Did you see what I saw?".

I'm going to have to also say the birth of my first child. I was in the delivery room with my wife at the hospital when my daughter was born. The nurse brought her right over for me to hold, it was a moment I'll never forget.

The start of WWII. I can remember paper boys delivering newspapers. I was only 6 years old. In those days they always put out an extra edition of the newspaper when major events took place.

"Extra, Extra, France declares war".

And the kids talking among themselves. Does your father have to go to war?

WWII had a great effect on children growing up during wartime.

Rationing of food. There was no candy bars available. Sugar was rationed.

It was 1939, and I was 3 years old. The flood waters of the Ohio River began lapping at our back porch, and my Dad was swinging me out over the water.

That's my most distant memory of anything.

The 1939 flood wasn't that bad, but the one in 1936, when I was a baby, caused us to leave the Island in a rescue boat. That was 81 years ago.

This is Wheeling Island, in Wheeling W. Va. I lived there from my birth in 1936 until 1944, when we boarded the old 1928 Hudson Super Six for relocation to San Francisco, CA.

Besides all the usual big events that we all seem to remember, two come to my mind. One very sad. The day my Dad came home from work early to have my 15 year old Beagle put down. I guess my mom called him because the dog was starting to have pain and had cancer. I watched from my bedroom window and saw my beloved dog sitting next to my Dad in the front seat. I could see that my Dad was next to tears. None of us ate dinner that night. The second event was the day my Dad drove home from work in a beautiful pure white Dodge Lancer. It was second hand but was so well taken care of. I thought he got a new car for himself but he gave it to me for my birthday so the following September I could drive to nursing school. I will never forget that day and what a wonderful Dad I had.
