What happened to kerchiefs?

When I was a tot, my mom wouldn't leave the house with her "car coat", and her kerchief. She had a bunch of them. All the women had them. Strange, not one of my classmates ever wore one. What ever happened to them? I don't think it's gotten less windy.

Maybe head scarfs went out of style when hair stiffening waterproof hairspray was invented.

How about the little pleated "rain bonnets" that folded up into a packet? A lady of the 50's would NEVER go out in the wet weather without wearing one of those.

My mon still wore one when I took her to the casino in my convertible! I knew I saw one recently!
