I was thinking valve grinder, but didn't know they made them out of wood ...

Very good, Phil! Actually it's called a Valve Lapper. The small sucktion cups grip the top of the valve while it's seated in the cylinder head and you put some abrasive paste (valve lapping compound) under the valve where it seats in the head. Then you twist the lapper back and forth between your palms to polish both surfaces so the vavle seals better when closed.
 
LAPPER! Yes. Don't know where I got "grinder" from.

Coolness - I used to work on all my cars but never to the point of lapping valves - I shied away from the scary stuff like that. :D
 
Oh, no! My high school autoshop teacher, Mr. Fournier (who had one of the first Stingrays and was probably barely 21) would fail me for sure having missed this one. Actually, I was the only surfer in his class and he just had me doing fiberglass work on his race cars...
