What is the shelf life of raw potatoes?

I bough some russet potatoes a few weeks ago and put them in a bowl on the kitchen counter. Today I went to bake them and they were rotten on the ends. I was wondering how well and how long raw potatoes keep at room temperature.

I've found that potatoes don't keep as long as they used to...but you should always keep them somewhere dark to maximize their shelf life...Mine usually only last about a week or 2 before they start to sprout .

I noticed they don't keep as long as they did years ago and if they are on sale they don't last either. When I grow them in the garden they last for months. Goes to show you how long they must keep them in storage before putting them on the shelf.

when i use to live by myself i always boiled several potatoes with the skin on ---i kept them in the fridge-when i wanted fried potatoes or potatoe salad--or potatoes au grouton i would have them ready so they wouldnt spoil

We usually buy yellow potatoes and keep them in the bottom drawer of the fridge, they last a long time, a couple of weeks at least.

I've seen potatoes turning green in the bins at the store. That is a chemical reaction to the lights and it means they've been there a while. I'm not surprised they aren't selling at $2.99 a pound. A good sized spud could cost a shopper 3 bucks.

Yes, I've heard that green part can make you feel a bit sick if you don't peel it all off. Don't how true that is.

I was in one of our supermarkets late one night and saw then covering all the produce with tarps. When I asked, they said they need a certain amount of darkness.

I just ran into this-

"
[h=2]Green Potatoes[/h]
You know how sometimes older potatoes can begin to turn a funky shade of green? Yeah, you don’t want to eat that part. When potatoes get too much sunlight, a chemical called solanine can build up to toxic levels, and that’s what the green is. If consumed, it can lead to headache, fatigue, nausea, and stomach issues. Store your potatoes in a cool, dry place and you’ll avoid this problem. "
