What is your tried and true method of falling asleep?

For the last several nights I have not been able to sleep. Just can't seem to fall asleep. I have been struggling with this problem my whole life. I'm beginning to wonder if some people just aren't made for sleeping. It's either not falling asleep or waking up at an ungodly early hour.

I have big probs sleeping through the nite ' when I wake usually at 2 ish could be earlier getting back is a problem '
toss turn 4pillows narrowing down to 2 ' duvet off then on .. the heat doesnt help so stuffy as I am in low level property rural
so keep the window shut as I dont know what could pop in lol...but now iam looking for a screen to fit the window so I can get fresh air in ,
may help ' dnt think there is a solution to sleep -either u sleep well or u dont' its in our make up !

Several years ago, I started drinking a nip (about half a shot) of flavored Vodka about an hour before bedtime. That seems to relax me enough such that I fall asleep quickly, and get a good nights rest. If we're spending the night at the casino, I drink a small glass of wine about 10PM, and by 11 my eyes are starting to droop. That's about the Only booze I drink, but it sure helps me get a full nights sleep, and is certainly a lot better than taking pills....IMO.

If I can't get to sleep or I wake up in the middle of the night I get up and putter around, watch TV, etc...

Not being able to get to sleep or stay asleep was more of a concern when I was working.

I have severe tinnitus. It's really bad in quiet environments - like when trying to fall asleep. When it's quiet, I hear several noises - a low-pitch generator & several high-pitch rings. I have the TV on with quiet volume to drown out the tinnitus & I set the TV to turn off in 30 minutes. That usually works.

Man, I have always had trouble sleeping. Now I drink a 4 ounce glass of wine which helps me go to sleep, but having to get up and urinate two to three times each night. (prostate) Some times I am going on 3 hours sleep, I took a 5 mg melatonin supplement last night, but was so groggy this morning I could hardly function. May have to put the wine bottle beside the bed. lol

I usually wake up around 2 AM and stay awake for an hour or two. I've found that doing a crossword puzzle usually makes me sleepy again, and I generally sleep very soundly the second half of the night.

I have noticed the same thing. If I drink ONE drink, it seems to help, but if I have any more than that, then I am tossing and turning.

Hubby has that same problem. We always have the TV on when we go to bed. Always set to a quiet show and have the sleep timer on. I would rather just have quiet, but I understand about the tinnitus.

If I have trouble falling asleep, I make myself get up the next morning instead of sleeping later to compensate. Then I'm so tired and sleepy that night that I can usually nod off fairly quickly. Occasionally I use melatonin, which really works for me. I have a bottle of melatonin gummies and if I take them I'm out within 20 minutes.

I think most of us have occasional nights when we just can't turn off the brain or something. Those are nights I really hate; listening to the tick of the clock while berating myself for crap that happened a lifetime ago.

Coping with severe tinnitus must be very hard, I'm sorry you suffer from that!!

I can't remember the last time I had a good nights sleep. I usually wake up an hour after going to bed and then the rest of the night I wake up over and over again. I've tried so many things including Xanax and nothing works for me.

I never have trouble falling asleep. It's waking up 3-4 hours later that happens every night. But I'm used to it so that's okay. I just go back to bed when I'm tired. But for the sake of staying on-topic. My tried and true method is to make sure all doors are locked, turn off tv, wait until I'm tired, cool temperature, clean bed, me clean, teeth brushed, hair out of face, 2 clean fluffy pillows, some deep cleansing breaths, and pleasant thoughts (sometimes that last one takes a little focus and sometimes some prayerful help lol).

My last 32 years of working was all done on third shift. Falling asleep was and still is an adventure. I know if I would take a sleep aid that would help. Even some alcohol may help, but I would rather not. I had a sleep study done that didn’t show much. The only thing the doctor wanted to do was to put me on a sleep aid and I declined, so I just suffer with it.

That's mainly why I like noisy environments. It's funny when I'm in a restaurant & a child at the table next to me is very noisy & the parents says to me, "I'm sorry." When I respond, "Oh, it's OK, I like noisy kids," they give me the funniest, puzzled look.
And, I NEVER hear any tinnitus at the movies or shooting range....LOL.

What's really interesting about tinnitus is that plugging up your ears with earplugs, headphones or fingers doesn't help - it makes it WORSE by making the environment quieter, which makes the tinnitus louder. The noise comes from inside; not outside.
