I'm not a Facebook person, but can't you just create a new account? FB was always bugging me about identity, too. And, yes, it definitely was FB and not a scammer. They wanted my telephone number. I wouldn't do that, and I was frozen out of my account.
Plus, FB lost its luster. Was it really important to know care that Cousin Ernie's dog got pregnant?

I had 5 FB accounts so far using all my emails: that's why I tried to create an AOL email account and gave up when they asked for my phone number. And yes, I know that there are many email options out there ..
